Watch the launch trailer for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Anniversary Edition

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Anniversary Edition (Bethesda)

Some background on one of the most successful games in the industry

Amazing how time flies. We barely blinked and it's been a whole decade since Skyrim broke into our lives. The successful role-playing game from the Elder Scrolls series is considered one of the best fantasy and open world games to come out, and it was also the highlight of the game. Games like Witcher 3, Red Dead Redemption, the Far Cry series and also Assassin's Creed drew quite a bit of inspiration from the same open world of Skyrim that responds to the way the players built their character, and applied a lot of elements in the games we see today.

Skyrim's character building system has enabled different types of characters to play with.

Unlike other role-playing games where you can choose a pre-made profession, in Skyrim you can combine different skills to build the profession you want and thus influence your playing style.

The game's fantasy world is full of magic, monsters, dungeons, treasures and mighty dragons that at the time were revolutionary in the field of fantasy games.

The first battle against a dragon is considered to this day one of the most iconic moments in the history of video games.

The game that never stops being released in remakes

After countless awards and record-breaking sales, the game was crowned a success and three great expansions were later released, Dawnguard introduced us to the story of the veteran vampire hunters order, Hearthfire added a building and house building system and the latest Dragonborn expansion sent us to a new island to fight the first dragonborn.

At the same time, Bethesda, the company that developed the game, also included the game's modem building tools and released it to players who very quickly established a great community that created content: new worlds, graphical game engine improvements, and quite a bit of hallucinatory content for those looking to make Skyrim bizarre. Dragons is good and beautiful, but have you ever tried to fight Thomas the Locomotive? Try it for yourself, and then you will know what fear is.

In light of the dizzying success of the game one can understand why over the years Bethesda has released different versions of the game for every possible game platform.

Just for the sake of understanding, the game has been released for the last three generations of the PlayStation, the Xbox, the Nintendo Switch console and also a virtual reality version.

Over the years we have received a variety of different versions: the Legendary Edition which included the base game and the three extensions, the Special Edition which included 64-bit support.

And now she deserves the version of the decade: the Skyrim Anniversary edition.

And approached the version of the decade

It is important to note that those who have the Special Edition will already receive some of the content as a free update, which includes graphic updates and faster loading times, a new mission called Saint & Seducers, survival mode, and in light of players' repeated demand also fishing mode.

The full version that comes in the anniversary edition however, includes a pretty respectable amount of new missions that add a lot of content and equipment and accessories within the game.

It’s also important to note that much of the content comes straight from the Creation Club, which is a mod shop where players create their own content and sell in a virtual store, so anyone who has already made purchases from the store in the past should take a look before upgrading to Anniversary Edition not accidentally purchasing content twice.

New content.

But is it worth it?

The amount of new missions is quite large and varied, and you will easily get close to 20 hours of play. The problem is that many of the missions feel very generic and repetitive, the annoying formula of going to place X to kill Y and taking Z is too repetitive of the new missions that offer nothing new or interesting.

Another annoying thing is the dialogues of the new characters in these missions, and it is very difficult to get into a story when the same actor is dubbing so many characters in the same mission, and making a different accent to the characters just feels like an unprofessional move.

What saves some of these missions are the new dungeons and monsters that infest them. There you feel the investment in the construction and planning of the dungeons and also in the design of the new monsters, which add a new and interesting challenge in the way you will have to defeat them.

The Anniversary version also includes lots of new treasures you will find during the new missions but most of it is also quite generic, except for a few cosmetic changes, no weapons or armor that are really interesting or particularly useful other than adding a little more damage or resistance to some element, but yes you can The new equipment in your home in a game in the shop windows.

The actress' prayers were answered: There is a fishing situation!

Those of you who actually like the system of building and designing the houses in the game will be happy to hear that the system includes new accessories for your fantasy home.

From new building foundations, walls, roofs to the level of interior design that will make even sims players jealous.

The construction itself is simpler than ever and it is very easy and clear to start building the house of your dreams.

And if you have already built a house then why not add to it a magnificent aquarium with the best fish that the cold north can offer!

For years fans of the series have been asking for a normal in-game fishing system instead of just jumping into the water and pulling out fish by hand.

This time you will have to purchase (or rob, depending on you) a fishing rod, bait and look for places where you can fish.

Each area on the map comes with different types of fish, some of which are rare and can be an important component in magic and alchemy.

The fishing method is surprisingly simple and fun, very convenient to stop after a deadly battle and release tension with the help of light fishing in the river.

The fish you caught can be displayed in a home aquarium in various designs, which adds quite a bit of character to your home.

And for players looking for a challenge ...

Those looking for a more hardcore in-game experience will be able to activate the survival mode that will turn Skyrim into a survival game.

You will have to worry about food and drink otherwise you will start to suffer from hunger and thirst, the extreme cold of the north can freeze you pretty quickly if you do not wear the right clothes and forget to go swimming in frozen rivers and lakes because hypothermia will kill you faster than any dragon if you do not notice how cold your character is.

Another element is rest, and you will get tired and have to rest between raids and dragon hunting, and promotion is only allowed after rest.

The survival system is relentless but is highly recommended for anyone looking to challenge themselves in the game.

The technical enhancements that come with the Anniversary version mostly give a serious boost to the game's graphics engine, which means faster loading times, smoother image, up-to-date effects and more detailed textures. One of the main problems of previous versions of the game was locking the frame rate at 60 frames per second, anyone who would try to open more frames would get a variety of issues that would knock the game out.

In the current version the frame rate is open and works smoothly. But despite the graphical improvements the game still suffers from problems in the physics engine that rages in certain situations, including the famous bug where giants can throw you into the sky excessively returned along with all sorts of other annoying problems.

Another and more critical problem causes the game to simply crash on computers with powerful hardware, and currently a lot of features need to be removed for the game to load or download an external fix that fixes the problem, but eliminates a lot of the graphics modes that come with the Anniversary version.

A bit defeats the principle.

In conclusion

Despite all the improvements and additions, the version of Skyrim: Anniversary Edition can feel a bit redundant.

The graphics engine updates come with issues that have already been resolved in the old versions, or some that are new to the new version.

The additional missions feel for the most part quite generic and uninteresting, and the improvements that are really interesting do not justify buying an entire DLC for them.

Finally, for those who want to go back to the frozen guarantees of Skyrim, it is recommended to try to get the Special Edition version which is considered much more stable and includes within it the free parts of the Anniversary Edition.

Maybe it's time for someone in Bethesda to start working on VI elder scrolls.
