The requirements for restaurants and bars are becoming increasingly strict due to the pandemic.

But how seriously do the restaurants take it?

Two EZ employees wanted to know exactly and tested several pubs in the district in one evening.

Rural district

- Actually, when entering a restaurant, the proof should be checked immediately at the entrance using a scan with the smartphone and name and age should be checked with photo ID.

Actually.

On Friday evening, November 12th, we visited eight restaurants in the district.

Conclusion: Many operators are uncertain about the applicable requirements.

In five bars it was enough just to hold up the vaccination certificate: “Looks good”, they say right away, or “I just believe you now that you are Mr. Scherer”.

Scan or photo ID?

Nothing.

The police and district office have ramped up controls

The police and district office have ramped up the controls to ensure compliance with the hygiene measures in the restaurants.

Failure to comply with these regulations means that restaurateurs face severe penalties - from heavy fines to closure.

How properly the restaurants check, however, also seems to depend on the occupancy: At a restaurant in Grafing, the staff cannot keep up with the influx of visitors and do not even ask for proof.

As a customer with a mobile phone in hand, directly at the counter: Nothing, except drinks and the bill.

Elsewhere, the landlord has made an extra effort to find a doorman who watches the entrance with his legs apart.

With a critical eye, he asks for proof, briefly looks at the QR code and we have our wristband.

High utilization or excessive demands would not be an excuse for an exemplary inspection.

Uncertainty among the hosts as to whether they can ask for ID

Several hosts have the false belief that they should not even ask for photo identification.

You fear a violation of data protection and personal rights.

However, you can ask questions.

If customers do not want to show the ID, the landlord has to refer them to the house.

Like with 15-year-olds who want to have a beer.

Particularly noticeable: Especially smaller pubs with only one service go to great lengths.

In Markt Schwaben, for example, people are scanned in accordance with the regulations and an identity card is required.

In the municipality of Poing, the scan is omitted, but here too, at least the name is checked.

Because, according to the bartender, customers could bypass the regulations too easily if they only had to show the QR code.

“There is confusion on both sides,” says a restaurateur

During an inspection last Thursday, the district office and police checked 18 restaurants, mainly in the south of the district, informed the district authority.

"The balance (...) was largely positive," it says.

But: “In some restaurants the vaccination certificates presented were not checked exactly or at least not compared with an identification document.

In these cases, the business owners were instructed, ”said the district office.

We also notice that the landlords actually want to do everything right.

A couple in front of us have to go home because the man forgot his vaccination card at home: “Unfortunately, we can't make an exception, because that wouldn't be possible if a check comes.” Nevertheless, the bar leaves us with a look on the QR code.

But there is confusion on both sides.

One of the operators complains: “People are no longer familiar with the rules.” His restaurant has already lost half of its customers and no one knows exactly what is actually going on.

Conclusion: positive

“It's really funny right now.

It's really fun ”, another restaurateur summarizes the situation with a roll of his eyes.

While there is a big party in Cologne, one has to pay attention to masks, distance and correct controls.

Almost a two-class society, according to one operator.

Also clearly noticeable on our pub crawl: A certain mistrust on the part of the landlords towards unknown guests.

For example, when asked whether a mask is necessary when going to the toilet, a landlord answers with the counter question: “Where do you work?” Because he has already been checked twice by the police.

Conclusion: The fear of controls seems to have reached the hosts.

We have been checked in seven out of eight pubs.

Scanning and ID checks everywhere, then nothing stands in the way of safe enjoyment.
