In El Salvador, the drama of enforced disappearances

While the number of homicides last year reached its lowest level in twenty years, more than 600 kidnappings were recorded between January and June. Most are attributed to the infamous Mara Salvatrucha and Barrio 18 gangs.

Plagued by gangs, El Salvador is known to be one of the most violent countries in the world. For five years, the country has recorded a drop in homicides, but this figure obscures a more silent violence, such as extortion, the control of entire districts of the city or enforced disappearances.

That of the young footballer Jimena Ramirez, on October 24, is the latest in a series that has scandalized the country.

Last May, a clandestine grave containing about forty bodies was discovered in the small town of Chalchuapa.
