Official visit: Defense Minister Ganz arrives in Morocco Israel today

Defense Minister Bnei Gantz is expected to pay an official visit to Morocco next week and sign a security cooperation agreement with the North African kingdom, Reuters news agency reported tonight (Monday).

This is the first visit of an Israeli defense minister to the country. 

Although the details of the visit have not yet been released in full, Gantz is expected to meet with Moroccan defense minister in the capital Rabat.

Foreign Minister Yair Lapid visited Morocco in August and was the first Israeli foreign minister to visit the country since 2003.

In the last two years, Morocco has upgraded its diplomatic relations with Israel following the effort to normalize with Israel in the Arab world.

President Donald Trump's administration has recognized Morocco's sovereignty in Western Sahara, a move that has also led to a thaw in Rabat's attitude toward Israel.

This year, an Israeli diplomatic mission opened in the country and direct flights between Ben Gurion Airport and various destinations in Morocco began operating during the summer months.

Morocco, which in the early 2000s lowered its diplomatic relations with Israel as a sign of solidarity with the Palestinians.
