Roger Federer is unlikely to play in next year's Australian Open, but he is still determined to return to tennis at some point, according to his coach Ivan Ljubicic.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion has been inactive since losing in the Wimbledon quarterfinals in July and undergoing another knee surgery.

When asked if Federer would return to action for the first Grand Slam of the year in January, former world number three Ljubicic said the signs weren't promising.

"I think there is very little chance, he is still recovering and, knowing him, he wants to be sure that he can play to win the tournament and be 100%," the Croatian told Stats Perform.

"So I think the Australian Open is not a real possibility right now. But it will go step by step because he is already 40 years old and he needs to be patient. He cannot recover as quickly as before."

Roger Federer is tied with Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic in the race to be the most successful men's individual Grand Slam champion of all time, and the Australian Open organizers would have hoped to have all three at Melbourne Park.

Nadal, who has had his own injury problems, has said he will be there, but Djokovic has refused to confirm his presence until Tennis Australia reveals health protocols for the tournament.

The Serbian, number one in the world, has not confirmed whether he has been vaccinated against covid-19, a prerequisite for entering Australia under current regulations.

The Australian government has said it will admit unvaccinated players as long as they are willing to spend 14 days in quarantine and the state of Victoria requests an exemption.

Victoria's Prime Minister Dan Andrews has made it clear that the state will not request exemptions for unvaccinated players.

Tennis Australia has repeatedly said that negotiations with the government on the issue are ongoing.

Ljubicic said he was sure Federer wasn't thinking of hanging up the racket just yet.

"We have spoken and I can guarantee that he wants to play tennis again," he added.

"When he decides to quit, he will retire, but I don't think it will happen suddenly."
