Like Cristobal Balenciaga before him, Martin Margiela embodied in the world of fashion the
designer's designer
, the one his peers cited as an example. In 1988, when he had founded his brand and presented his first fashion show, all his vocabulary was laid down, with a foreknowledge and maturity that still leave us admiring. Why, twenty years later, has he left his territory of expression? Did he say it all through the garment? Has he no longer supported the fashion system, its financialization and its frenzy? Whatever his reasons, he decided one day to leave without looking back ... except that he strongly contributed to the two exhibitions devoted to him, in 2017 in Antwerp (on his collaboration with Hermès) and in 2018 in Paris, at the Palais Galliera.
