Surveys have shown that the health status of young children in grassroots families is not as good as ideal, and the situation has become worse in all aspects under the epidemic.

Many grassroots children have different health concerns, including problems such as weight, oral cavity and eyesight that are worthy of attention.

Some doctors believe that it is particularly important to provide appropriate support as soon as possible, such as helping to increase parent health education so that children can develop healthier living habits from an early age.

The "Jockey Club Tong Liang Project" grassroots child health survey report was conducted by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust and the University of Hong Kong, The Boys' and Girls' Clubs Association of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Christian Service from 2018 to 2021.

Through the project, 32 participating pilot schools in Tin Shui Wai and Sham Shui Po were contacted. In addition to providing comprehensive support to approximately 1,600 grassroots children and families aged 3 to 6, they also conducted a series of health surveys and assessments for the beneficiary children.

It was found that they had varying degrees of effects on nutrition, sleep time, exercise volume, weight, mouth and eyes.

75% of the grassroots children surveyed take too much salt every day

The survey results show that nearly 90% of grassroots children have insufficient daily intake of milk products or substitutes; 70% of grassroots children have excessive daily salt intake; and nearly 60% of grassroots children have adequate daily calcium intake.

Long-term unbalanced diet and unbalanced nutritional intake can easily lead to obesity and increase the risk of various diseases.

The survey also pointed out that the oral situation of grassroots children needs more attention.

More than half of the young children were found to have at least one tooth decay after being evaluated. At the same time, parents mistakenly believed that the deciduous tooth is not important, but poor oral hygiene can cause bacteria to remain and affect their health.

Under the epidemic, children's exposure to electronic products has greatly increased, and nearly 40% of the grassroots children under investigation need to undergo further eye examinations.
