Chinese President Xi Jinping last night (Wednesday) warned US President Joe Biden during a virtual summit that Beijing is ready to take "decisive steps" if Taiwan moves toward independence - a move it has defined as a red line. Biden, for his part, stressed to Shay Washington's concern about human rights abuses in its territory.
According to Chinese media, Shai also warned Biden that any support for Taiwan's independence would be "like a game of fire," adding that "those who play with fire will be burned." These expressions represent Chinese nationalist rhetoric, which intensified when delivered in person in the most extensive conversations the two leaders have held to date.
In response, Biden said the United States remains committed to the "one China policy", which recognizes only one sovereign Chinese state, and that Washington "strongly opposes unilateral efforts to change the status quo or undermine peace and stability throughout Taiwan."
The phrase was not only a reminder for Taiwan not to declare independence, but also for China, not to consider invading the democratic island.
Biden told Shay that the two countries have a responsibility to ensure that the rivalry between their two countries does not "become an open conflict."
