The local council in the town of Maaloula in Damascus Countryside has completed the first phase of the project to rehabilitate the archaeological eastern valley in the town in coordination with the Damascus Countryside Antiquities Directorate with the aim of ensuring safe passage for visitors and tourists between Mar Takla Monastery and Mar Sarkis Monastery.

The head of the local council in the city, Ibrahim Al-Shaer, indicated in a statement to SANA’s delegate that the first phase included paving the Faj and pouring it with cement to protect the infrastructure and prevent soil erosion and the formation of pits as a result of torrential rains in the winter season, stressing that the second phase of the project will start within days and include the bedding of Faj with torrent sand suitable for the site and the installation of Lighting and stone benches, in addition to distributing waste baskets within the bay in shapes commensurate with the archaeological site.

According to Al-Shaer, the project will help restore activity in the valley and facilitate the movement of tourists and visitors, explaining that an office will be allocated at its entrance to register the entry of tourists and provide them with the necessary information and services.
