My wife, a makeup artist who spends hours on her feet, decided to try a pair of Crocs to ease the nagging pain at the end of the day.
"You should try them," he told me after selecting a black and white pair.
I refused but was curious.
Could these shoes be so comfortable that people would willingly wear something so, well, ugly?
When she wasn't looking, I put on a pair.

While my Crocs offered sublime support and comfort for walking the dogs or around some stores, I had no way of knowing if they would hold up during the ambulatory rigors of travel.
Hours of travel and roughly 10,000 steps later, I checked into my hotel at Universal Studios and my feet felt good.
None of the tension or throbbing that I usually experience, even in my most comfortable tennis shoes, after walking through two airports.
"I think I'm going to wear them to the park tomorrow," my wife said.
"Are you wearing yours?"
No, I couldn't.
A day of travel was one thing.
Several miles of walking around a theme park, queuing for who knows how long, is another.

I could and did for the next four days, through Universal's two theme parks, plus Disney World's Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, and Disney's Hollywood Studios.
And he was not alone.
I realized that theme parks are a fertile habitat for Crocs.
What I appreciated the most was how cool and dry the perforated caps kept my feet in the Florida heat.
Those holes let water in when the thick moisture gave way to rain, but I simply took my socks off, and when the precipitation stopped, my feet and shoes were dry in a matter of minutes.
No one caught in an Orlando sports tennis downpour can say that.
The versatility of the Crocs outfit also came in handy in the mornings at the hotel, when I left the room for coffee in the lobby.
I don't know about you, but I don't travel with tennis shoes, and I hate having to wear socks at 7:00 AM.
Ultimately, comfort remains Crocs's biggest buying point.
During my last four days in Florida, I amassed 87,777 steps walked with them.
My feet remained pain free, and because of such a solid and supportive base, my legs and back did too.
The pair of Nikes I packed was not used.
The next trip, I'll probably leave them at home entirely.
