Many clubs aim to qualify for the Premier League this year, but is the National League really capable of providing two newcomers? • Israel Today examined what has happened in the last twenty years

1.

In recent weeks, the debate between the administration League Basketball Association regarding the amount arising from the National League Premiership.

The administration claims that the latest agreement signed between the parties explicitly states that if one of the immigrants is unable to realize her qualification for the first league, section two immigrants will be repealed and in the coming years there will be only one immigrant.

The union does not deny an agreement between the parties, but says that the administration should act in favor of Israeli basketball and for the teams that aspire to rise to the main stage.

2.

The main argument of the administration is that even if two immigrants are decided, it is not at all certain that the national can provide each season two teams that will meet all the various budgetary requirements and criteria such as proper hall, infrastructure, audience and more.

On the other hand, the union says that more and more teams are increasing their budgets and doing proper infrastructure work that will help them qualify for the first league.

National League Board Chairman Ron Voroticki said last month in an interview in this section that in the coming years the minimum budget will increase significantly as well as the requirements threshold for halls, so that clubs are more professional and ready to rise as soon as they get sporty.

To get another indication of the National League's ability to provide two immigrants each season, "Israel Today" reviewed what has happened in Israeli basketball in the last twenty years, in seasons when there were two immigrants and in seasons when there was one immigrant.

The data show that since the 2001/02 season there have been nine seasons in which two immigrants were initially determined.

In just three of them, both teams exercised their sporting right and played in the Premier League the following season.

In the other six seasons at least one of the two teams waived the right, and sometimes both.

In the 2001/02 season there were four newcomers (since it was decided to increase the first league that season), and Rosh HaAyin relinquished the right, but the first three went up and also remained for a long time in the senior league.

In most seasons when one of the teams gave up, the result was that one of the relegated teams remained in the Premier League, a figure that goes against the values of sportiness and can even damage the reputation of the league.

In contrast, in 10 of the 11 seasons in which there was one immigrant, the team that finished first exercised its right and did play in the Premier League the following season.

The only team that gave up the right was Hapoel Holon in the 2005/06 season, which realized that it was not ready to play in the first league yet, but in the following season it won the second league championship once again, qualified and also won a historic Premier League championship in 2007/08.

This season there are many clubs aiming for promotion, and it is likely that at least most of them have the means to do so and can meet the requirements - Nahariya, Maccabi Ashdod, Maccabi Haifa, Hapoel Afula, Maccabi Urban Raj and Elitzur Ashkelon.

It could be, as the union and the National League administration say, that in recent years there have been more teams that can qualify, and Elitzur Netanya, which surprised everyone (and herself) is an exceptional case.

However, following the data we have presented, care must be taken to ensure that there are no more cases in which a group will not be able to exercise its right of aliyah, since the saga that occurred with Netanya last summer did not add respect to the industry.
