The former Libyan army chief, Khalifa Haftar, announced that he will submit his candidacy papers for the presidential elections in Libya to the High Electoral Commission at its headquarters in the city of Benghazi.
In a televised speech today, after presenting his papers, Haftar affirmed his "adherence to the country's unity, sovereignty and independence," noting the need to "align with the Libyans to implement their ambitions."
Haftar pledged to start the path of reconciliation, peace and construction if he wins the upcoming elections.
The Electoral Commission had announced the acceptance of the papers of the candidates Saif Al-Islam Gaddafi and Abdul Hakim Bayou for the presidential elections.
The presidential elections in Libya are scheduled to be held in two rounds, the first starting on the 24th of next December, and the second with the parliamentary elections 52 days after the first round.
