After two false starts, the trial of Cardinal Angelo Becciu, 73, resumes this Wednesday at the Vatican.
A trial that is not only his, to tell the truth.
They are ten other defendants, but the Sardinian prelate is the best known.
He was in fact number three in the Vatican from 2011 to 2018, until Francis took away all his powers overnight, on September 24, 2020. With the title of “substitute”, Becciu held a key position, equivalent to a Secretary General of the Holy See and of Vatican City.
These eleven defendants, ten Italians and one Swiss, are accused of having been involved since 2014 in a real estate investment - aimed at the acquisition of a luxury London building - which went wrong, in particular because the intermediaries were corrupt.
The Vatican-owned building at 60 Sloane Avenue, a prestigious address in the English capital, is said to be on sale now.
Which could result in a loss of more than 100 million euros for the finances of the Church
