Robert Modlinger is dead. The long-time chairman of the game association Erdweg died at the age of 73 - after a difficult fight.

Erdweg / Sittenbach

- After a long and serious illness - as has only now become known - Robert Modlinger, long-time head of the Erdweg game association, died last Wednesday.

He would have been 74 on December 13th.

“He fought so much,” says his wife Josefine, with whom Modlinger had been married since 1968 and who lovingly cared for her husband to the end.

Josefine Modlinger comes from Sittenbach.

The couple, who had two sons and later three grandchildren, lived there in the wife's parents' house.

Robert Modlinger was born in 1947 in what was then the Altomünster Hospital, but grew up in Unterweikertshofen and went to school there.

He learned the trade of book printer in Dachau and worked for a few weeks at Münchner Merkur in Paul-Heyse-Straße.

Before that, Modlinger did his military service, acquired a truck driver's license from the federal government and quickly realized that driving a truck was more fun for him than working as a printer.

So he applied to a transport company in Esting and from then on drove heavy loads to wineries all over Germany.

"In doing so, he got to know and appreciate wines," says Josefine Modlinger.

In 1984 Robert Modlinger switched again and trained as an insurance salesman at the Raiffeisenbank.

For a few years he ran the business from home, later he opened a large agency in Erdweg, in which, after a while, his son Robert junior also worked until 2013.

The name Robert Modlinger is inextricably linked with sport, especially football, and the Erdweg game association.

He was a member there for 61 years and from 1985, after the Hans Wölfl era, he was chairman of the association with over 1500 members for 21 years.

Under his direction, renovations were carried out, the sports grounds and the clubhouse were enlarged.

It was a great pleasure that the Erdweg community built the handicapped-accessible triple gymnasium for school and mass sports in 1994. Robert Modlinger was also the driving force behind the legendary Hawaiian Festival, which initially organized the football department and later its own sponsorship association in order to generate money for the maintenance and care of the sports grounds.

At the 60th anniversary of the SpVgg in the summer of 2017, Heinz Rottmeier appointed his predecessor as honorary chairman of the SpVgg for his many years of activity as chairman. Robert Modlinger was "overwhelmed" at the time. “Robert took care of everything, was a humorous person,” Heinz Rottmeier remembers of his long-term companion. A few years ago he introduced the senior afternoon in November and organized a retiree outing on a Wednesday each month. The solidarity among senior citizens was very important to him, said Rottmeier. Even when he was no longer in the front row.

“He had a lot of friendships,” confirms his wife.

But her husband never really recovered from a severe stroke of fate, says Josefine Modlinger.

In 2017, the son Markus had a fatal accident and a grandson was seriously injured in the accident.

He had eaten the grief into himself.

The urn burial for Robert Modlinger will take place in the immediate family circle.
