A major fire in a warehouse in Bochum led to traffic obstructions on the A40 on Monday evening.
According to the police, the industrial building of a construction machinery company is right next to the motorway.
Due to the strong smoke and flames, the A40 in the direction of Dortmund was temporarily closed.
According to initial findings, no one was injured.
Bochum - The police were initially unable to provide any information about the cause of the fire.
At times the building burned to its full extent.
The emergency services only managed to get the fire under control late in the evening.
According to the fire brigade, it was possible to prevent the flames from spreading to a workshop hall, outdoor storage areas and a diesel tank.
The subsequent extinguishing work proved to be difficult, as there were many nests of fire under the partially collapsed hall structure.
Around 60 firefighters were reportedly on duty.
A fire watch should remain on site until daybreak.
At around 11 p.m. the police tweeted that the blockade in the direction of Dortmund would be lifted.
The entrance and exit Bochum-Wattenscheid-West will remain closed in both directions for the duration of the extinguishing work.
On the A40 there could be slight obstructions to the view due to the smoke.
According to the fire brigade, increased levels of pollutants in the air could not be measured.

Smoke on ICE: Cologne main station temporarily closed
Cologne Central Station was closed for about 20 minutes on Tuesday morning because smoke had developed on an ICE train coming from Frankfurt.
The ICE stopped shortly before the entrance to the main train station.
According to a spokesman, the alarmed fire brigade found smoke under the rearmost wagon of the train.
"That has been extinguished," said the spokesman.

63-year-old dies in a fire in downtown Coburg
A woman was killed in a fire in an apartment in downtown Coburg on Friday afternoon.
Police officers could have saved the woman from the smoke-filled living quarters and immediately started resuscitation measures, the police said on Friday.
In the hospital, however, the 63-year-old succumbed to her injuries.

At the end of August there was a major fire in a tire warehouse on the A40 in Bochum.
Because of the fire damage on the route, the motorway in the direction of Dortmund between Bochum's Westkreuz and Bochum-Zentrum had to be closed.
The police assumed it was arson.
