Opinion | Shooting at Gun Thieves: Too bad they waited for political justification Israel today

2021-11-16T21:39:02.889Z

Why only when the problem becomes political-criminal do the provisions suddenly change? • Soldiers should hit gun thieves not because Abbas wants to, but because gun theft is a national threat

Reactions on social media to the news of the change in the order to open fire on IDF soldiers were mixed.

And there were those who did not believe that there would be a substantial change;

And there were those who said good morning Elijah, what did you suddenly remember.

In my eyes all the answers are correct.

Burglary of IDF bases and theft of ammunition from them became a matter of routine. Tselim and other bases and simply load weapons, with the armed soldiers standing there helpless.

The damage to the security, sovereignty and souls of the soldiers is unbearable.

Therefore this change is welcome, on the face of it.

Prime Minister Naftali Bennett also responded and congratulated the IDF on "an important change in the procedures for opening fire.

"IDF soldiers must be able to defend themselves - and us. We continue to fight crime and restore security."

The report revealed that the change in the fire regulations will apply in three sectors: military bases and IDF training areas, the border crossing with Egypt, where arms smugglers pass without fear, and the territories of Judea and Samaria.

This story is strange, both in terms of timing and essence.

The smart masses did not just ask "why now?".

After all, we have known about the thefts and smuggling for many years.

But beyond the slogans comes a disturbing truth, and behind the move the interest emerges.

There is no healthy move here to restore sovereignty, to apply the law or to fight terrorism.

There are coalition agreements.

Because there are Arabs in the government, and their interest is to fight the rising violence in their society, one of the steps is to stop the ammunition tap coming to it, and that is smuggling and theft.

The IDF has turned from an army that fights enemies, that fights to win - into a security company that is hired ad hoc. This is what happened as soon as it was added to the war on crime in Arab society.

And this is what drives me crazy: as long as it was a national-security matter, no finger was pointed.

When it becomes a political-criminal matter, the provisions for opening fire are suddenly changed.

Just as the prime minister says: "We continue to fight crime and restore security."

But since when has a war on crime been the role of the IDF?

The confusion between the role of the army and that of the police is not good for anyone, neither the Arabs nor the soldiers.

It is good for all of us that in front of civilians there will be a police force (a better police force than it is today, and still, a police force), while in front of the enemy - an army.

And the fact that soldiers are occasionally sent on police missions, never ends well (did anyone say "disengagement" and not get along with a rift, torn soldiers and a betrayed public?).

Soldiers should hit gun thieves not because Mansour Abbas wants peace in the triangle villages, but because gun theft is a national threat.

I therefore welcome some of the changes in the instructions, only from a statement that it came from the wrong reasons.
