Following the incident of a water buffalo hitting a person in Pui O, the buffalo movement in Lantau Island has attracted much attention.

A concern group said that on Monday (15th) the veterinary team of the Fisheries and Conservation Department had to go to Mui Wo to find a buffalo bitten by a dog for treatment, but the search was unsuccessful.

During the operation, the staff of the Fisheries and Conservation Department attempted to "take the way" to take away an old cow king for sterilization. After being stopped by the neighbourhood, the old cow king was released and sent back to the Bei'ao Wetland.

He Lai, the former chairman of the Lantau Buffalo Protection Association, criticized that the AFCD would neuter the cattle indiscriminately, causing other bulls to compete for territory, and questioned the agency’s inability to protect the safety of the cattle herd and habitat.

The Lantau Buffalo Protection Association stated on Facebook that the veterinary team of the Fisheries Conservation Department suddenly caught the king of cattle in Mui Wo on Monday afternoon.

When she arrived, she saw the large truck of the Fisheries and Conservation Department being blocked by two vehicles. She learned that the old cattle king had been captured and boarded. A group of neighbourhoods asked the AFCD veterinarians to release the cattle king. Lao Niu Wang was relieved of the traffic pressure of the long journey and the pain of surgery and was safely sent back to the Pui O Wetland.

He Lai said that the veterinarian team went to Mui Wo yesterday to find a buffalo whose testicle was bitten by a dog to treat the injury, but the injured cattle could not be found.

During the operation, it was discovered that Lao Niu Wang was taken away instead, and he planned to sterilize it, which aroused public outrage.

She pointed out that most of the water buffalo hide in hidden places. In the past, if the veterinary team wanted to find the injured cattle, they usually notified the local cattle watchers and animal protection groups in advance, and the assistance of local residents would be more effective.

When the residents learned that Lao Niu Wang was sent to the car, the residents were very worried that if they were not handled properly, the elderly Lao Niu Wang would die unfortunately due to complications during transportation and would not be able to return to the habitat in the future.

He Lai bluntly said, "Conservation work must ensure the stability of species and the safety of habitats, but now there is no (cattle) habitat that is not affected or destroyed."

Random neutering may cause an imbalance in the herd

In other words, the old cattle king involved this time has been the cattle king in Pui O for more than ten years. He is well-behaved and spiritual, and knows how to manage cattle. "When there are large public events in Pui O, the cattle will be curious to see Look, it will come out to separate the cattle and people." Later, the position was replaced by the new cattle king. Recently, he changed to live in Mui Wo, but he was almost caught and sterilized.

She believes that the Fisheries and Conservation Department usually does not sterilize the cattle king. In addition, the Pui Ao New Cow King has not returned because of the injury incident. The old cattle king can return to Pui Ao to help manage the cattle herd.

She believes that indiscriminate neutering may cause an imbalance in the herd, causing other bulls to compete for habitat.

Regarding the conservation and management work of the AFCD, she bluntly said, "Conservation work must ensure species stability and habitat safety, but now there is no (cattle) habitat that is not affected or destroyed." She explained, the cattle management team Responsible for public safety risk work and preventing the spread of diseases. It cannot guarantee the safety of cattle and habitats. "The veterinary team handles complaints when they receive complaints. It is not conservation, but public safety and risk management."
