The United States plans to diplomatically boycott the Winter Games in Beijing, due to China's human rights violations, the Washington Post reported tonight (Tuesday).

According to the publication, President Joe Biden's official decision will be made at the end of the month.

Some human rights organizations have called for a total boycott, but the administration has chosen not to harm American athletes.

Tonight, Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Biden held a virtual summit.

During the meeting, Jinping warned Biden that his country was ready to take "decisive steps" if Taiwan moved toward independence - a move it defined as a red line.

Biden, for his part, stressed to Shay Washington's concern about human rights abuses in its territory.

According to Chinese media, Shai also warned Biden that any support for Taiwan's independence would be "like a game of fire," adding that "those who play with fire will be burned." These expressions represent Chinese nationalist rhetoric, which intensified when delivered in person in the most extensive conversations the two leaders have held to date.

"China is patient and seeks peaceful unification with sincerity and great effort, but if the separatists in Taiwan challenge, or even cross the red line, we will have to take decisive steps," the Chinese leader said. Beijing opposes Washington's efforts to share Taiwan in the international system, and Biden's recent comments that the United States will defend Taiwan in some cases have also sparked tensions.

In response, Biden said the United States remains committed to the "one China policy", which recognizes only one sovereign Chinese state, and that Washington "strongly opposes unilateral efforts to change the status quo or undermine peace and stability throughout Taiwan."

The phrase was not only a reminder for Taiwan not to declare independence, but also for China, not to consider invading the democratic island.

Biden told Shay that the two countries have a responsibility to ensure that the rivalry between their two countries does not "become an open conflict."
