The U.S. State Department announced tonight (Tuesday) that Russia has conducted a missile test against satellites that endangered seven astronauts on the International Space Station.

In the experiment, he claims, the Russians blew up an old Soviet satellite, and the explosion created debris that was scattered in space.

The Russian military and the Russian Defense Ministry have so far not commented on the reports.

U.S. State Department spokesman Ned Price noted that the experiment and its results illustrate that Russia's opposition to space weapons is hypocritical, and that Russia's conduct is dangerous and irresponsible.

He further noted that the Russian missile has generated more than 1,500 pieces of debris moving in orbit in space and other smaller pieces that could endanger additional satellites.

The NASA space agency also referred to the Russian experiment, claiming that it created debris around the Earth, which posed a danger to the International Space Station and would jeopardize space activity for years.

Earlier, the US military said it was aware of a "waste" incident in space, and an anonymous source said it appeared Russia was conducting a satellite weapons test last weekend.

Experts say that anti-satellite weapons that smash their targets into pieces pose a danger in space due to the formation of a cloud of shrapnel that can collide with other objects.

These in turn can trigger a chain reaction of particles in the Earth's orbit.

"We are actively working to characterize the waste field and will continue to ensure that all countries operating in space have the information necessary to maneuver satellites that will not be harmed," the United States Space Command said in a statement.

The United States conducted the first experiments against satellites in 1959, when satellites themselves were rare and new.

Last April, Russia conducted another experiment with an anti-satellite missile, against the background of making space in space an important area for future warfare.
