Members of the Nicaraguan government will not be allowed to enter the United States after the results of the elections in the Central American country, according to a new proclamation by President Joe Biden.

The United States government rejected the preliminary results of the elections in the country and, on Monday, the State Department announced sanctions against Nicaraguan government officials.

The restrictions apply to the wife of President Daniel Ortega and Vice President, Rosario Murillo, and members and officials of the Nicaraguan Government, as well as "others described in this proclamation who formulate, implement, or benefit from policies or actions that undermine or damage institutions. or prevent the return to democracy in Nicaragua, "according to the proclamation.

In a separate press release, the White House also announced that the national emergency "regarding the situation in Nicaragua" that was originally declared in 2018 will continue for one year.

"The repressive and abusive acts of the Ortega government and those who support him force the United States to act," Biden said in the proclamation.

"The repression of the Ortega government against opposition leaders, civil society leaders and journalists in preparation for the Nicaraguan presidential and legislative elections of November 2021 damages the institutions and processes essential for a democracy that works," he added.
