Now a new generation of ghost hunters is starting: "Ghostbusters: Legacy", staged by Jason Reitman.

Our cinema review:

Yes, are they now abandoned by all good spirits?

"Ghostbusters" from 1984 is a wonderful science fiction comedy.

Til today.

Staged with humor and charm by Ivan Reitman and played by the likes of Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver with just the right mix of seriousness and ironic "What are we doing here?"

You can't continue such a film - and you can't either: The version from 2016 with ghost hunters was - sorry ladies - completely for the bin and should never be mentioned again.

"Ghostbusters: Legacy": Jason Reitman directed the comedy

But now “Ghostbusters: Legacy” starts and shows that it can work. Jason Reitman - yes, it stays in the family - has taken on his father's work. His comedy is a tribute to the first film, but at the same time its charming and independent continuation. Today - the events of 1984 are only a few clips on YouTube - the focus is on the siblings Trevor and Phoebe, who are moving with their mother into the inherited house of their grandfather in a hamlet in nowhere in America. With the tragic comedy “Juno” (2007), which touches the heart, Reitman showed that he knows the (tormenting) ghosts that haunt teenagers - and that he can stage their lives sensitively but also with humor. Here it is above all Phoebe, Mckenna Grace plays the little IQ heroine very big with nose-wise cheek, who quickly checks that strange things are not only going on in Grandpa's house. No, the whole place seems like a paranormal paradise.

Trevor, whom Finn Wolfhard shows as a not-so-bright puberty, is mainly occupied with his emotional storms, vulgo hormones, but at least makes an important discovery in the barn.

The Cadillac that is rotting there is the legendary "Ecto-1" that their grandfather once used to go ghost hunting.

It goes without saying that the grandchildren don't want to back down.

"Ghostbusters: Legacy": Nostalgia meets reinterpretation

The vehicle from the '84 movie isn't the only reference in "Ghostbusters: Legacy". After all, who but Reitman may know better the legacy that is to be administered here? He succeeds. Of course, the script, on which the director wrote together with Gil Kenan, can be criticized for the fact that its orientation towards the first comedy is as clearly recognizable as the marshmallow ghosts in the supermarket. In addition, the authors are of course aware of the success of “Stranger Things”: Wolfhard played one of the leading roles there, as here; In addition, the composition of the young clique is quite similar to that from the exciting Netflix series.

But that doesn't really matter as much as Phoebe's statement "I am a scientist!" Is correct.

Because "Ghostbusters: Legacy" is exciting, entertaining cinema fun for the whole family (free from the age of twelve), which works perfectly even without the nostalgia factor.

All the better, however, that there is one on top of that.

Reitman not only uses props and sayings from the eighties, some of which he puts in new contexts (“Who you gonna call?”).

He was also able to fill a few supporting roles from his father's ensemble (too much is not revealed at this point) - and called four very old ghosts for the finale.

Even the one who actually died seven years ago.

So beautiful.
