Munich - The corona pandemic continues to have a firm grip on the world.

Despite an extensive vaccination campaign, the number of infections and incidences are currently increasing across Europe.

In Germany, the seven-day incidence has been over 300 for days, in the Free State of Bavaria even over 570 (a current overview with all the figures can be found here).

The fourth wave has long since spread in neighboring countries, in some cases with even higher incidences than in Germany.

Corona in Austria: Incidence skyrockets

The situation in our southern neighbor, Austria, is particularly critical. With an incidence of 908.2, the Austrians clearly have the highest value of all German neighboring countries. Since Monday, the Alpine republic has been trying to react to the high incidence values and the heavily overloaded hospitals with a lockdown for unvaccinated people. Unvaccinated Austrians are no longer allowed to leave their home, with the exception of essential purchases, visits to the doctor or commuting to work.

In the Czech Republic, the infections are not on par with the Austrians, but they are still significantly higher than in Germany.

The value of 738.4 is the third highest value in a comparison of all German neighboring countries and is almost twice as high as the incidence in the Federal Republic (319.5).

Belgium currently lies between Austria and the Czech Republic, the value of our western neighbors is only slightly above that of the Czech Republic (739.6).

The incidence in Italy and France is comparatively low

Italy is not a direct neighbor, but it can still be used as a yardstick for the fourth wave in Germany.

Especially at the beginning of the corona pandemic, the Italians had to struggle with a large wave of infections and a high death rate, but the southern Europeans seem to have coped well with the fourth wave so far.

With an incidence of 90.1 Italy is well below Germany and its neighboring countries, only France with a value of 116.7 is within "striking distance".

The French are thus the only neighboring country with an incidence below 200. In the Netherlands, the incidence is 644.8.

This is followed by Denmark (411.3), Switzerland (298.0), Poland (279.0) and Luxembourg (218.5).
