Fresenius Medical Care has announced extensive job cuts in the face of severe losses during the corona pandemic.

The group is also using the red pencil in Germany.

Bad Homburg - The planned reduction of 5,000 jobs worldwide at the dialysis company Fresenius Medical Care should also affect the workforce in Germany.

The Dax company had informed the employees that they wanted to cut 500 to 750 jobs in this country, said the general works council chairman Stefanie Balling and IG-BCE district manager Ralf Erkens of the dpa news agency.

All areas at the headquarters in Bad Homburg, but also other locations in Germany, are likely to be affected. A company spokesman confirmed that 500 to 750 jobs at German FMC locations could be cut "within two to three years". One will proceed as socially acceptable as possible.

The general works council had been asked to address its questions to the company within a week, said Balling.

One will not comply with that like that.

There was still a lot of in-depth information missing about job cuts and the specific consequences for the company as a whole.

So far, it is also unclear in what manner the downsizing should take place.

"A careful handling of the fate of many employees is not," said unionist Erkens.

The general works council and IG BCE want to develop counter-proposals before starting concrete discussions with the group.

FMC: Corona crisis hits dialysis specialists

The Fresenius subsidiary FMC, which operates around 4,100 dialysis centers for kidney patients worldwide, announced an austerity program at the beginning of November to combat cost pressure and the consequences of the corona crisis.

Lean structures and the reduction of 5,000 jobs worldwide are planned.

With this, the group wants to reduce the annual costs by 500 million euros by 2025.

Details on the program are still being worked out.

FMC has been troubled by the pandemic for a long time.

Many people with chronic kidney disease die of the coronavirus, which depresses the number of treatments in dialysis centers.
