It is a sector on the borders of biology, computer science and artificial intelligence, in full expansion.
Sofinnova, one of the European venture capital giants dedicated to life sciences (2.5 billion euros in assets under management), has just raised 150 million euros to invest in industrial biotechs.
This is its third fund, the objective of which is to finance start-ups that rely on biotechnologies to develop sustainable solutions in food, agriculture, chemicals and materials.
The challenge for this sector, which includes green chemistry in particular, is to design from nature (biomass, sugar, starch, etc.) raw materials and products that take into account the depletion of our resources and climate change.
It is also a question of inventing non-toxic fertilizers for the environment, natural ingredients for cosmetics, bioplastics for packaging or cellular meat as an alternative.
