Is the Regensburg Christmas Market taking place now?

The city does not want to provide information on this until Friday.

This hesitant attitude is largely unprecedented in Bavaria.

Regensburg - Just a few days before the official opening date of the Christkindlmarkt on Neupfarrplatz and the Lucrezia-Markt on Haidplatz in Regensburg *, the stand operators and feeders are hanging between hope and fear.

While the vast majority of Bavarian cities have already made a decision on their markets against the background of the rising Corona numbers, the city leaders in Regensburg refuse to communicate.

Christmas market in Regensburg: City postpones press conference

A press conference of the city originally scheduled for Tuesday has now been postponed to Friday at short notice - then it would be only three days until the opening of the Christmas market. At the same time, the stand operators and feeders received a comparatively bland letter. "The currently prevailing dynamic development of the corona pandemic * unfortunately does not allow an earlier point in time for the press conference," it says. It is hoped to be able to announce “more detailed information” on Friday.

But what does that mean?

Is it just a question of how, a hygiene concept with appropriate requirements - or is there also the possibility of a complete cancellation in the room?

The municipal press office does not answer a specific request.

"Since the current situation has to be evaluated again from an infectious and organizational point of view, we ask for your understanding that we will only comment on this on Friday," it simply says.

Regensburg: hanging party to the Christkindlmarkt - criticism from the stand operator

"This procedure is even worse than last year", annoys a stand operator from the Neupfarrplatz who does not want to be named. During the run-up to Christmas 2020, the city of Regensburg put a similar hangover - and then canceled the market a few days before the planned opening. “Why aren't we told what the problem is? What exactly is it about - or at least, even if it would be very bitter that the market in all probability will not take place? ”Some of the employees at the stands would have to travel from far away and then book accommodation. "The closer that is, the more difficult it becomes."

In fact, the city of Regensburg's messy communication is largely unprecedented.

Nuremberg, for example, decided this week to host the traditional Christkindlesmarkt, albeit under strict conditions, while in Munich Mayor Reiter announced the cancellation yesterday, Tuesday.

Landshut has not yet made a final decision, but has at least made it clear that the opening date will be postponed.

“There is clear text there and no hanging part,” complains the stand operator.

"One wonders whether anyone in Regensburg is able to make decisions."

Regensburg: No plain text about the Christkindlmarkt - what are the city leaders waiting for?

What exactly the city of Regensburg is waiting for is unclear. Prime Minister Markus Söder only announced on Monday that “politicians are not currently planning to cancel Christmas markets”. If so, a decision of this magnitude should be made nationwide, but not by individual federal states. And local politicians would be asked to provide clarity on site. But in Regensburg, despite urgent inquiries, they will only be available on Friday.

The operators of the private Regensburg Christmas markets, Peter Kittel with the "Romantic Christmas Market" at Thurn & Taxis Castle and the town mouse with its Advent market in the Spitalgarten, meanwhile assume that their markets will take place.

The preparations were in full swing, they say.

Peter Kittel wants to start on Friday - when the stand operators of the municipal market even know about it.
