When it comes to climate protection, the old and probably new coalitionists in Berlin don't want to mess up, they just want to mess up.

The city should not only become greener, but also cleaner.

Berlin - SPD, Greens and Left in Berlin want to get out of coal use faster than previously planned.

During their coalition negotiations, they agreed to take the last coal-fired power plant off the grid in 2028/29.

The negotiators of the three parties announced on Wednesday.

So far, the coal phase-out is planned for 2030.

Lignite has not been used to generate electricity and heat for a number of years, but hard coal is still used.

The faster energy transition is to be achieved, among other things, through massive investments in solar systems.

Two funding programs are planned for private homeowners on the one hand and for public buildings on the other, said SPD chairwoman Franziska Giffey.

The aim is to cover a quarter of Berlin's electricity needs from solar systems by 2035.

“Berlin cannot sit back and relax when it comes to protecting the climate,” emphasized left-wing top candidate Klaus Lederer.

Here will be a focus of investment in the new legislative period.

In addition to the energy transition, a heating transition is important in order to replace fossil fuels with renewable energy sources.

In the foreseeable future, however, gas will still have to be used as a fossil fuel.

According to the Green top candidate Bettina Jarasch, the three parties, who have been ruling together since 2016, also agreed to put a stronger focus on the energetic renovation of buildings.

In this context, a “training and advertising campaign for climate trainees” is planned in order to train more specialists in the area that is important for climate protection.

Berlin is committed to the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees compared to the pre-industrial era, said Jarasch. In order to adapt to climate change, measures are planned to make the city greener and more liveable, such as an area unsealing program and heat action plans. "More wells, more benches, more trees are needed, especially so that people can live well in this city in summer," says Jarasch.

Giffey emphasized: "It is very clear: Berlin should become climate-neutral." However, the parties in the coalition agreement want to forego precise targets in this regard.

A debate about target numbers is of no use, said Jarasch.

It is more important to concentrate on the implementation of concrete measures.

The Energy Transition Act currently stipulates that climate-damaging CO2 emissions should be reduced by at least 70 percent by 2030 compared to 1990 - and then by at least 90 percent by 2040 and by at least 95 percent by 2045 at the latest.

Giffey is initiating negotiations on red-green-red in Berlin

In Berlin, after numerous exploratory talks, an initial preliminary decision was made.

The SPD approaches the Greens and the Left.

But the future head of government is clearly having a hard time.

While the SPD, the Greens and the Left wanted to negotiate on the subject of mobility and traffic in the evening, they also agreed on Wednesday on a stronger approach to the littering of the city. Among other things, the Berliner Stadtreinigung (BSR) is to ensure cleanliness in more parks than before and take over these tasks from the districts. In addition, there should be the option of picking up bulky waste free of charge throughout the city, for example as part of regular campaign days.

So far, there is no such thing across the board, citizens have to bring bulky waste to recycling centers themselves.

Consequence: Many people simply throw rubbish of all kinds on the streets.

Giffey said that when garbage was lying around everywhere, it was a constant nuisance for many Berliners.

It is also bad for the overall image of the city.

"We have to improve this situation," said Giffey.

“We have to do it with greater vehemence.

Because the way the city looks now in some places is not an acceptable condition. "

The coalition negotiations began on October 22nd.

The umbrella group, which consists of top politicians from the three parties, wants to meet again on Friday.

Then it comes to urban development.

The coalition agreement should be in place by November 24th.

With the approval of the party committees - or, in the case of the left, its members - Giffey is to be elected as the new governing mayor on December 21.

In the House of Representatives election on September 26, the SPD became the strongest party ahead of the Greens.

The left landed in fourth place behind the CDU.
