Smith's body was found half a block north of downtown Houston as officers responded to a report of a shooting just before 7:00 a.m. local time.

The victim was reportedly killed by a gunshot to the head.

According to a witness, the couple was arguing in the middle of the street next to a white truck.

The man drew a long gun and shot her only once, wounding her, then turned back to his truck and escaped.

Detectives have discovered that Smith texted a friend minutes before she was shot, sharing her location in case something happened to her, according to court documents.

"Kwan kidnapped me

,

"

he wrote from the back of his truck.

When her friend asked why her boyfriend had done this, Smith replied, "He has my money and he doesn't want to give it to me."

Smith no longer responded to subsequent messages her friend sent her.

Later, detectives found a white Chevrolet pickup that was registered to Boyd.

Someone had removed her license plates and she was parked in an uninhabited house that was locked with a padlock and chain.

"We're pregnant!"

When investigators searched Smith's home, they found a card on his dresser dated October 3 addressed to Boyd, according to court documents.

Written in black marker, there was a note on the card that said, "Kwan, I know this is not what we expected, but WE ARE pregnant!"

A local clinic nurse told police that Smith had an ultrasound done on October 5 and that she estimates she was four and a half weeks pregnant.
