Penzberg

- The Taliban took power in Afghanistan in August. Since then, people at risk have been taken out of the country, including local staff from the German federal ministries. Some of them will now be housed in Penzberg, as the city announced in a press release on Wednesday. The reception and distribution of people who have come from Afghanistan is controlled by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees.

According to the city of Penzberg, the government of Upper Bavaria already took over building section B of the communal accommodation on Nonnenwaldstrasse in Penzberg last weekend "to accommodate local families from Afghanistan".

They will be housed in the first building at the front; the Weilheim district office continues to operate building section A next to the Penzberg youth center.

A total of twelve families, a total of around 60 people, are expected in Penzberg by the end of the year.

Some of them have three or more children.

The first two families have already moved into the transition home on Nonnenwaldstrasse.

For example, they worked as translators, guards or cooks

According to the press release, Afghan local staff includes all "who have worked for German ministries on site for a long time in the past five years," the majority of whom worked for the Ministry of Defense. They helped on site as translators, guards, cooks, gardeners, air traffic controllers or as local drivers. “Local staff often made contact with the population and provided important information,” it says. Because of their previous activities, they are now at risk in their home country.

According to the city, all local employees and their families received a residence permit or a visa.

All relevant safety and disease reviews would take place in advance.

Mayor Stefan Korpan announced that he hoped that the local staff and their families would settle in well.

The Penzberg childcare facilities such as schools and kindergartens had been informed about the arrival of Afghan families.
