The country of Sweden imposed comparatively loose measures in the fight against Corona.

According to a study, this had a massive impact on the development of the virus.

Stockholm - As "Sweden's special route", the country's pandemic course became part of everyday language.

The EU country decided to operate in the Corona crisis without a lockdown and with rather loose restrictions.

Many looked jealously at the Scandinavians, who are currently reporting rather low case numbers (the background to this here).

However, according to a study, Sweden's strategy has helped the virus to be carried to other countries.

This is the conclusion reached by researchers from Uppsala University in Sweden, the Norwegian Institute for Public Health and the University of Sydney in Australia.

The study was published in the journal

Eurosurveillance

.

According to the study, Sonderweg in Sweden favored corona mutations

"In the first year of the pandemic, Sweden was a net exporter of the Sars-CoV-2 virus to our Nordic neighbors," said John Pettersson from Uppsala University on Tuesday to the Swedish TV broadcaster SVT.

In contrast to the other Scandinavian countries, the country initially took hardly any measures to stop the virus from spreading.

The result was high infection rates, which ultimately also favored the mutation of the virus.

The study is based on the analysis of 71,000 patient samples, which was used to create a kind of genetic family tree for the spread of Corona in the Nordic countries.

It turned out that chains of infection originating in Sweden crossed national borders in several hundred cases.

Sweden's special path had an impact on the entire Nordic region

"Our results suggest that Sweden's containment strategy has had an impact on the epidemiological situation in the country and in the entire Nordic region," the study said.

One must, however, take into account that Sweden - like Denmark - is a transit country.
