Xiaomi Mi Smart Projector 2: analysis of the small projector with Android TV

2021-11-17T23:33:16.339Z

It is compact and achieves a projection of up to 120 inches with good detail and colors, but the best experience is obtained in very low light.

The Xiaomi Mi Smart Projector 2 is a compact projector that allows you to carry it from one place to another without much difficulty to have a really good viewing experience, something ideal for a movie night.

Compact design

The Xiaomi Mi Smart Projector 2 has a white body and a front part with cloth that covers the sound system and has perforations for the projection light and for the sensor that allows the projector to focus and automatically adjust the image when it is turned on or when it is moved in a considerable way.

This Xiaomi projector is compact measuring 115 x 150 x150mm which allows it to be held with one hand without much difficulty.

In addition, its 1.8 pound weight makes it relatively light and the combination allows it to be moved from one location to another without much difficulty.

However, unlike other compact projectors that I had tested years ago from companies like ZTE, this Xiaomi Mi Smart Projector 2 does not have a battery that allows even more flexibility.

The Xiaomi Mi Smart Projector 2 has its ports on the back, one for electricity, a traditional headphone jack, a USB 2.0 port and an HDMI 2.0 port.

At the bottom it has a connector for a tripod type support and on its sides you mainly find ventilation openings.

On the other hand, its remote control has the same design as that of the Xaomi Mi Box S and other similar devices, which makes it simple, with a button dedicated to Netflix and Google Assistant.

The control works fine, but what is needed is backlighting or at least the buttons to glow in the dark, something important considering that the darker the better the image quality.

Android TV and functions

The Xiaomi Mi Smart Projector 2 has Android TV that looks more and more like what Google TV offers, the most recent version of Google's operating system for televisions.

This means that it has a main screen similar to what we find on Fire TV and even Apple TV, instead of not taking advantage of the top as much and focusing only on lines of apps or channels.

Android TV allows you to install all kinds of apps from the Google Play Store, both as apps to enjoy content, such as games or simply informative.

What still seems strange to me is that an app like DirecTV Stream is not available even though it is possible to install it on an Android cell phone or tablet, but something I have experienced on other devices with Android TV and Google TV.

However, Amazon Prime Video is also not compatible with the Xiaomi Mi Smart Projector 2, while others are.

Anyway, as the Xiaomi Mi Smart Projector 2 has casting functions like a Chromcast, it is possible to transmit an image to the projector from your cell phone from these apps.

On the other hand, the autofocus function works very well.

The projector does not even have to be level, but it can be tilted and the image is adjusted.

Anyway, on these occasions you can perceive the external lighting (the one that does not show the image) in an unbalanced way which is understandable and does not really bother much, but it is remarkable.

If you move the projector, it will auto-adjust the focus successfully in just seconds.

After trying much more expensive large projectors, which although they have automatic focus and do not adjust the dimensions or image level, it is something that is highly valued.

Image quality, sound and performance

The Xiaomi Mi Smart Projector 2 projects an image up to 120 inches optimally.

The image it offers is good and Full HD, but the experience may vary depending on the conditions.

This means that the darker it is, the better the experience.

And the larger the image, the quality may deteriorate a bit.

This means that if it is daytime it can be difficult to see the image, even if you close your curtains or blinds and they do not block the sunlight too much.

Anyway, I find the image detail and color reproduction to be good considering its compact design.

In terms of sound quality, the Xiaomi Mi Smart Projector 2 also offers a good experience although it will vary depending on the content you play.

Something to keep in mind is that the ventilation system can be heard easily, but I think you end up forgetting about it when you see the content.

Price

The Xiaomi Mi Smart Projector 2 will be arriving in the coming months to different markets around the world.

In the United States and Mexico its price has not been confirmed, but the Xiaomi Mi Smart Projector, which is the previous generation, is sold in the United States for

US $ 499 and in Mexico for

MX $ 16,900.

The new Xiaomi Mi Smart Projector 2 is expected to arrive with a slightly higher price.

conclusion

The Xiaomi Mi Smart Projector 2 is a good compact projector that can satisfy those who do not want to spend much more money on a traditional large projector.

Of course there are projectors that offer a better image and are brighter, but they are more expensive.

During the month that I have been testing it, I have enjoyed it and it was my main method of watching Netflix and other content apps.

Anyway, I understand that in a very bright room the quality will drop, but one of the weaknesses of this technology is the same, regardless of the size.
