"Loveless Canal" should be more beautiful

The “Bacherl” in Ledererstraße should be redesigned to make Weilheim's old town more attractive.

This is what the ÖDP city council group demands.

This could be financed with the support from the special fund "Revitalize inner cities".

But the council colleagues are skeptical - and initially rejected the application.

Weilheim

- Actually, the small stream in the Ledererstraße together with the fountain in front of the music school should "contribute to increasing the attractiveness of the city", recall the two ÖDP representatives Roland Bosch and Gerd Ratter of the Bacherl building in 2010 as part of the renovation of the old town.

But eleven years later one had to state that this goal had only been partially achieved.

"Unfortunately, the Bacherl resembles a loveless canal, which is fraught with the risk of falling and injury due to the hard edges and its depth," says the application.

And further: “A barrier with traffic signs is supposed to reduce the risk, but it is purely visually unattractive.

The bridges over the Bacherl are like a temporary solution.

In addition, the Bacherl is largely blocked by outdoor catering and only freely accessible in a few places. "

Tap into funding pots

The ÖDP city council is therefore applying for a redesign: "with benches as rest areas, play and paddling opportunities for children and an attractive green area". In their opinion, this would "contribute significantly to the quality of stay in the city center and thus to its permanent revitalization" - which is urgently needed in view of the vacancies. At the same time, "the previously relatively narrowly delimited core zone around Marienplatz" would be straightened out and expanded.

According to the ÖDP, the redesign can be financed from the funds that Weilheim receives from the Free State's “Inner Cities Revitalize” fund.

The city has been promised a total of 240,000 euros, which, with an 80 percent funding rate, corresponds to an investment volume of 300,000 euros.

Part of it is intended for temporary use concepts, a future workshop and investments in the “Kulturstadel” on Eisenkramergasse.

But the city plans to use 135,000 euros for various beautification measures in the city center over the next three years (we reported).

Redesign would be "luxury"

However, it is more than questionable whether the ÖDP proposal will come into play.

According to Manfred Stork, head of the building administration in the town hall, the Bacherl was part of a competition that was subsidized through urban development funding.

If the restructuring were to take place so soon, funds would have to be repaid, Stork warned, and there would be no new ones - which means that the project “cannot be represented in the current budget situation”.

"It would be a luxury to tackle this again after ten years," said Rupert Pentenrieder (BfW) at the latest building committee meeting: "We have very different measures to take." He also questioned whether this would really make Ledererstraße more attractive: "The attraction here is more in the outdoor catering, which needs space." The area "rather to embellish with green plants", suggested Klaus Gast (CSU).

With the exception of ÖDP representative Ratter, all building committee members rejected the application for Bacherl redesign.

However, it was agreed that the above-mentioned future workshop for the city center should discuss how Ledererstraße can be made more attractive.
