Angela Merkel's time as chancellor is coming to an end.

But the CDU politician will also get an office as a former chancellor.

And apparently plans with a generous workforce.

Berlin - With the approaching change of government, an era ends in the Berlin Federal Chancellery.

Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) resigns after 16 years.

Her successor is expected to be Olaf Scholz from the SPD, should the Social Democrats set up the traffic light coalition with the Greens and the FDP as expected.

For the future former Chancellor Merkel, after four legislative periods as head of government, the political work is not quite over.

As usual, the Christian Democrat is also entitled to an office in the government district.

And Merkel wants to equip this with an astonishingly generous number of employees.

Bundestag submission revealed: Merkel wants nine employees for the former chancellor's office

As can be seen from a template for the main committee of the Bundestag, the Chancellor plans to have a total of nine office workers after leaving office. As a result, the Federal Chancellery formulated the request to assign Merkel an office manager, a deputy office manager, two technical specialists, three clerks and two drivers. A salary of B6 is planned for the two leading positions, which corresponds to a monthly salary of around 10,400 euros. For all nine employees - depending on their professional experience - between 46,000 and 56,000 euros per month could be incurred.

"After her chancellorship, the future Federal Chancellor (ret. Since positions would be saved in the Ministry of Defense, the new positions are covered, it said. Merkel's predecessor, Gerhard Schröder, was somewhat more modest in 2005, according to dpa information. The former SPD chancellor got two fewer employees for his state-funded office than his successor is now aiming for.

On Wednesday (November 17), government spokesman Steffen Seibert commented on Merkel's office plans and defended them: "It is in line with longstanding state practice that Chancellors are provided with an office when they are not on duty to support them in fulfilling their official duties," said Seibert.

"Private activities or activities aimed at income will not be supported by this future retired office," affirmed Merkel's spokesman.

Former Chancellor's office: Merkel benefits from regulation - Scholz would be hit harder

A possible Chancellor Scholz, who is currently concretizing the plans of the traffic light parties, is unlikely to be assigned such a large staff at the end of his term of office. Because as early as 2019, the Budget Committee had decided that future Chancellors and Federal Presidents would only be paid an office manager, two speakers, an office or typist and a driver. Merkel's wish is a whole four employees above this limit. But this should probably be fulfilled. The reason: The decision will only apply to future Federal Chancellors and Federal Presidents.

With regard to her office space, Merkel is now following in big footsteps.

wants to know, the CDU politician will take over the former office of her former sponsor Helmut Kohl.

Merkel's party colleague, who has since died, had also ruled for 16 years before the “Chancellor of Unity” was voted out of office in the 1998 federal election.
