Alarming number of space debris orbits the Earth | Video

US officials and members of the scientific community have condemned the launch of a Russian missile that created some 1,500 pieces of traceable debris.

These are in addition to the more than 9,600 tons of debris that orbit our planet, according to the European Space Agency.

Concern is growing in the face of a possible environmental tragedy.
