A double-deck KMB overturned on Shing Wan Road in Tai Wai yesterday (18th) night, causing one death and 12 injuries. This is the fourth fatal bus accident in the past five years.
The last time it was in 2018, the KMB route 872 overturned on Tai Po Highway, resulting in 19 deaths and 67 injuries, making it the second most serious bus accident in Hong Kong’s history.

On February 10, 2018, the KMB route 872 was on the Ma Liu Shui section of Tai Po Highway near Tai Po Kau. It overturned due to speeding, resulting in 19 deaths and 67 injuries.
The car captain involved was sentenced to 14 years in prison and suspended for life.
On September 22, 2017, a city bus shoveled a pedestrian way out of control in Sham Shui Po. The roof was opened by the canopy of the building, causing 3 deaths and 30 injuries.
The driver pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death, and dangerous driving causing serious bodily injury. He was sentenced to 30 months in prison and suspended for 5 years.
On January 14 of the same year, a city bus was driving towards the Eastern Tunnel on Lei Yue Mun Road. It lost control and rushed onto the rock and iron fence, then overturned, causing 1 death and 20 injuries.
The driver pleaded guilty to two counts of dangerous driving causing death, and was sentenced to 3 years and 6 months in prison and suspended for 5 years.
The most serious bus accident of the century occurred on July 10, 2003.
When a truck reached the Ting Kau Bridge section of Tuen Mun Road, it suddenly braked. The trailer crashed into a KMB carrying 41 people. The bus flew 30 meters down the hillside, causing 21 deaths and 20 injuries.
The truck driver was found guilty of dangerous driving causing death and sentenced to 18 months in prison and suspended for 2 years; later on appeal, he was sentenced to 5 months in prison and suspended for 2 years.
