Memmingen - Because the immune system of many children has hardly been trained due to strict hygiene regulations in the past year and a half due to the corona measures, well-known cold viruses of the cold season, such as the RS virus (respiratory syncytial virus), now encounter a weakened one in children Immune system.

"The flood of patients can hardly be controlled," says the head of the children's clinic, Prof. Frommhold, according to a press release from the clinic.

"Many parents are just realizing that their children are much more often and more seriously ill than before," says the chief physician at the Clinic for Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine at the Memmingen Clinic, Prof. Dr.

David Frommhold.

In this case, the doctor does not mean a disease caused by Covid-19, but by various other respiratory viruses.

"It was not foreseeable that such a huge wave of infections would roll through the country after these long lockdown phases and really overrun the children's clinics," claims Frommhold.

According to the chief physician, the flood of patients can hardly be controlled.

"The wards are full or overcrowded and there are so many patients in the emergency department that the waiting times are increased immensely," explains the chief physician.

The nationwide lack of care with the resulting bed locks adds to the problem.

"Nevertheless, in a country of high-performance medicine, we have to work together with our colleagues in the practices to provide our smallest patients with good and safe medical care," emphasizes Frommhold and adds: "And the parents can help us with this!"

Rapid relief of the child's emergency rooms by reassuring worried parents and sensible regulation of patient flows is very important. "I can very well understand that parents are worried about their sick child, especially now, but it is part of the normal development of the immune system that it deals with various pathogens." Help cure: "If your child shows signs of infection such as fever, cough, runny nose or diarrhea, this is in most cases not an emergency." On the other hand, simple domestic measures such as antipyretic, adequate fluid intake and rest periods would very often help.

"If the parents need medical advice, the right doctor should be consulted at the right time, especially now," says Frommhold. "Primarily, the health insurance company is available for this, that is, the parents should present their child to the resident doctors in the practice or to the pediatrician on-call service on weekends and holidays."

“The main task of the emergency department at the children's clinic is to admit seriously ill patients for further inpatient treatment,” explains Chief Physician Frommhold.

So there children are examined and treated who the parents consider to be in need of inpatient treatment.

It should be noted that the children are treated according to the severity of their illness and not according to the time of arrival, which can currently lead to longer waiting times.

"For a few weeks now we have been observing an excessive use of the children's emergency department with overloading the children's clinic," says Prof. Dr.

Frommhold and therefore advises all parents to adhere to the above-mentioned supply paths.

"Because if parents come to our children's clinic with their sick children without thinking twice, at any time of the day or night, we are quickly overloaded and no longer able to treat all patients appropriately." This unnecessarily endangers human lives.

His appeal to all parents is: “Help us to treat our sick children well even in these difficult times!”.
