Minister Ayelet Shaked in Washington: Arranging Visas - An Opportunity That Will Not Return (Shmulik Almani)

Interior Minister Ayelet Shaked, who is visiting Washington, this evening (Thursday) concluded a meeting with Homeland Security Minister Alejandro Mallorks, which dealt with granting an exemption from entry visas to Israeli citizens.

At the end of the meeting, Shaked said: "The American administration is very committed to the process of exemption from visas for Israelis. The Minister of York told me during the meeting that there is a window of intra-system opportunities here, that we must take advantage of it to move forward."

According to Shaked, this is a one-time opportunity, and therefore the two countries must work quickly.

"I am full of hope and motivation to bring to an end the process that has been going on between the countries for about a decade," Shaked added.

"The process will take at least a year, and will be completed in early 2023."

The meeting, which was also attended by Israeli Ambassador to the United States Mike Herzog and the US team in charge of the issue, focused on finding solutions to two main obstacles: lowering the percentage of Israelis to apply for visas below three percent and giving Americans access to the Israeli criminal registry.

This is similar to the other member states of the VWP program.

At the end of the meeting it was decided to set up inter-ministerial work teams to deal with these issues.

The American team will arrive in Israel in January 2022 to examine the issue closely.

Ministers Shaked and Myorx agreed to hold a monthly conversation between them to monitor the progress of the process.
