Memmingen - In a press release, the city of Memmingen announced that a new stop rule was introduced at the mini roundabout in the west of the city.

The aim of the measure is to avoid dangerous situations for road users in the future as far as possible.

The mini roundabout at the intersection of Frundsbergstrasse, Laberstrasse and Buxacher Strasse was set up in the spring of last year to improve the flow of traffic and create better crossing options for pedestrians and cyclists. However, the right-of-way rules that are common in roundabouts were often disregarded and accidents occurred. Now a new stop regulation is to make the right of way regulation clearer.

At roundabouts, road users must slow down when entering the roundabout and pay attention to the right of way for vehicles in the roundabout. This rule was disregarded again and again at the mini gyro. For this reason, a stopping point was set up in the entrance area to the roundabout for vehicles from Laberstrasse and Frundsbergstrasse. It is precisely there that the right of way rules have so far been disregarded most frequently. By signposting a stop point and marking a stop line, road users coming from the north and south are now obliged to brake until the wheels come to a standstill before entering the roundabout. When stopping and starting again, the person then has more time to see whether another road user with right of way is already in the roundabout.Compliance with the new regulation will also be monitored by the police.

In principle, legally secure signage according to the road traffic regulations should be sufficient and should be observed by every road user. Unfortunately, this was not always the case at the mini roundabout, according to the city. Accidents, near misses and other dangerous situations increased at the roundabout. The victims were often cyclists. The main cause of the accidents were motor vehicles that entered the roundabout from Laberstrasse or Frundsbergstrasse in disregard of the applicable right of way rules.

Significant improvements have already been achieved by setting up advance notices and attaching marker buttons.

The number of accidents recorded by the police in mini roundabouts, for example, was reduced from seven in the period from June 15 to October 15, 2020 to two in the same period in 2021.

The new stop rule should bring a further significant improvement.

Road traffic office and civil engineering office, together with the traffic department of the police station in Memmingen, continuously monitor and evaluate the traffic and accident situation there.
