Rapper Young Dolph dies after being shot at a cookie store in Memphis

Admired in the hip-hop community for his authenticity, Dolph was attacked by a man on the run, authorities reported.


Rapper Young Dolph, 36, was shopping for cookies when a man shot and killed him on Wednesday in Memphis, Tennessee.

Now the authorities are looking for the person responsible. 

According to The Associated Press news agency,

local police have no information on the suspect

who shot the artist at

Makeda's Cookie’s

store

, located near the Memphis International Airport. 

“The tragic shooting death of rap artist Young Dolph serves as another reminder of the pain that violent crime brings.

My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends, ”Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland said in a statement. 

The Daily Memphian newspaper reported that Young Dolph's cousin Mareno Myers said the rapper had been in town since Monday visiting an aunt who has cancer and was also handing out Thanksgiving turkeys.

"He was inside (the store) and someone jumped at him and took his life,"

Myers told the newspaper.

Meanwhile, Maurice Hill, the owner of Makeda's, told local channel WHBQ that the rapper had gone into his place to buy cookies when a vehicle approached and someone fired the fatal shot.

Last week the cookie shop posted a video on Instagram of the rapper promoting their wares, saying that Dolph visited the store whenever he was in Memphis.

Adolph Thornton Jr., as was his birth name, was born in Chicago and moved to Memphis when he was 2 years old, according to The Commercial Appeal newspaper.

the rapper released numerous songs, beginning with the

Paper Route Campaign

in 2008, and multiple studio albums, including his 2016 debut

King of Memphis

He also collaborated on other mixes and albums with his colleagues Key Glock, Megan Thee Stallion, TI, Gucci Mane, 2 Chainz, and others.

Young Dolph had three albums that reached the top 10 on the Billboard 200 chart.

released in 2020, peaked at number 4.

The musician was rapping about being a drug dealer and his life on the streets of Memphis.

He recently performed in a concert at the University of Memphis and performed at halftime of a

Memphis Grizzlies

team game 

.

Young Dolph had survived other shootings.

He was shot multiple times in September 2017 after a fight outside a Los Angeles hotel.

In February of that year, his SUV was hit by more than 100 shots in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The incident served as the inspiration for the song

100 Shots.

He said he survived because he had bulletproof panels on his vehicle, The Commercial Appeal reported.

Memphis officials, athletes and numerous members of the music industry posted their condolences on social media.

"RIP my friend Dolph this broke my heart," rapper Gucci Mane posted on Twitter.

Music producer Omen also posted a message on Twitter, saying

“We are already losing too many black men to health problems, racism, jail,

etc.

We have to find a way to heal and not add to that our own violence.
