Recently, the reorganization of the performing arts circle (entertainment circle) in the Mainland has become the focus, as evidenced by the Internet madness of the "restriction order", the "list of banned 47 people", and the "list of inferior artists".

People are wondering how long the remediation will last, and who will be the next wave of artists to be named?

"Hong Kong 01" sorts out the major public opinion storms in the mainland performing arts circle that has attracted the attention of the media on the two sides of the strait in the past 20 years, and combines the observations raised by the senior media person Shang Taiyu in the 01 interview, and counts the artists' "troublesome upper body" and the mainland performing arts road What is the degree of impact.

This is the first article (four articles in total) in a series of special reports on "Renovating the Entertainment Circle".

Sorting out the celebrity public opinion turmoil since Zhao Wei's "Japanese uniform" incident in 2001, it is not difficult to see that the cause of the incident is inseparable from "violation/violation", "politics", "moral disputes" and "relatives, fans, fans and other related people's words and deeds." There are four (non-self) categories, and different types of causes have varying degrees of influence on official attitudes and even the subsequent trend of events.

Figure 1: The impact of "violation of laws/regulations" disputes on star performing arts (2001-2021).

(01 drawing)

From the time point of view, it is not difficult to find the trend of strict regulations in the entertainment industry. Not only the attitudes and methods of the officials and the people are "increasing", the "stain" of artists has also shifted from legal and political "rigid conditions" to morality and ethics. Private life and other aspects, and the 2014 official "bad deeds order" can be regarded as the beginning of these changes.

Artists involved in violations of laws and regulations: from light hair to "kill all"

They all say that "the law is the lowest standard of morality."

If an artist is involved in tax evasion, drug abuse, prostitution and other violations or illegal incidents, while facing legal sanctions, his acting career will also be hit hard.

From Figure 1 and Table 1 (see below), it is not difficult to find that the mainland entertainment industry is gradually moving towards "zero tolerance" for illegal artists.

There are two key time points for tightening restrictions on such artists. They are the 2014 "Inferior Deeds Order" and the "Four Resolute Do Not" in 2018 to further regulate.

The fact is that before 2014, only a small number of celebrities’ violations of laws and regulations would become blockbuster news. The tax evasion of Liu Xiaoqing, which dates back to 2002, was considered the top news issue, but at that time Liu Xiaoqing was released from prison after being detained for more than a year. When it comes to performing arts work, there is no official interference.

Liu Xiaoqing (left) and Fan Bingbing (right) are both tax evasion, but their fate is different.

Earlier, many voices questioned why Fan Bingbing did not need to be "detained," but few people paid attention to why Liu Xiaoqing did not need to "retire from the showbiz."

(Synthetic picture/Weibo)

As of 2014, well-known artists Fang Zuming, Ke Zhendong, and popular singer Li Daimo for participating in the talent show "The Voice of China" were all detained for drug-related matters, and actor Huang Haibo was also detained and educated for prostitution, and there were subsequent "drug-related" artists. The "pornography" incident was exposed, and the trend of the performing arts circle suddenly became the focus of attention of the government and the people.

In September of that year, the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television issued a "Notice on Strengthening the Management of the Production and Distribution of Radio and Television Programs, Film and TV Dramas, and Online Audiovisual Programs), announcing the cessation of the performing arts of these "bad actors" in order to avoid negative impact on the society. Cause adverse effects.

The "Inferior Deeds Order" clearly named "drug abuse" and "prostitution" behaviors, but did not mention ethical issues.

The notice also mentioned that movies, TV shows, web dramas, and micro-movies in which bad actors participate will be suspended.

In 2018, the popularity of "Rip Hop in China" caused a series of controversies, and the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television upgraded the "Restricted Entertainment Order" ("Restriction on Over-Entertainment of TV Programs" Opinion Document, 2011) and proposed "Four Resolute Do Not".

In May of that year, Fan Bingbing's tax evasion storm broke out. In contrast with the tax evasion incident of Liu Xiaoqing in 2002, Fan Bingbing has not been able to return to the scene until today, and the two suffered far apart.

After 2018, almost all of the artists involved in illegal and criminal acts have lost their careers, and the power of blocking has become more and more tough.

For example, the pianist Li Yundi who was arrested a few days ago for prostitution, 48 hours after the arrest news came out, the China Performing Arts Association required member units to boycott, the show was removed, and the alma mater studio was delisted. manner.

Touching the political red line: the government and the people are no longer tolerant

When it comes to the "banning" of entertainers in the Mainland, many people may first think of "whether they have encountered a political red line."

According to the data, it is not difficult to see that when an artist encounters political controversy, it is indeed rare to get up.

In 2001, Zhao Wei was criticized by the public for wearing a Japanese military uniform, and was splashed with dung during public activities. Although she had to apologize several times in public to calm the angry public opinion, the official did not say anything to stop her acting activities. .

Since the 2014 "Inferior Deeds Order", a large number of artists have been banned due to political controversy, or have gradually disappeared from the mainland performing arts circle.

Look up the 2014 "Inferior Deeds Order" and the 2018 "Four Resolute Do Not Use" ("Four Do Not Use"). The former mentioned that it should conform to the "core socialist values", while the latter mentioned that "actors who renounce the party resolutely" No." It can be seen that the standards for political disputes have always been strict, but judging from the extent to which cases have been reported, there is a tendency to become more stringent.

Table 2: The influence of "politics" controversies on star performing arts (2001-2021).

Especially in the current Internet age, celebrities face various "censorships" from netizens, and may be "turned over" at any time due to a sentence many years ago (extended reading: Xiao S is bizarre and besieged. Senior media person: Hong Kong and Taiwan artists enter the mainland The market needs to think about three things), a film or a photo many years ago may ruin an artist's acting career.

Affected by the narrowing of public opinion space in recent years (for example, the trend of whistleblowing), there is no "fuzzy space" for political expressions, and the radicalization of netizens' boycott behavior sometimes exceeds official standards, forcing the official media to speak out and cool down.

During this year’s Olympics, Taiwan’s artist Xiao S’s “national hand” triggered a “Taiwan independence” controversy. Advertising endorsements were urgently cut, and then it came to an end after the official media spoke out for it and criticized netizens for tagging their hats. However, Xiao S’s success in mainland China The acting career has suffered irreparable losses.

Netizens’ reports and boycotts have become another binding force on celebrities’ words and deeds in addition to official governance.

Figure 3: The impact of "moral disputes" incidents on celebrities' performing arts (2001-2021).

(01 drawing)

Ethical disputes: strict regulations since 2018

Compared with issues such as violations of laws/regulations and political red lines, before the official upgrade of the "entertainment restriction order" in 2018, celebrities who caused moral controversy were usually not blocked.

At that time, any derailment, accusation of "scumbag", etc., would not make the official boycott his acting work. At most, he was abandoned by the market and fans voluntarily because of the collapse of his own image.

However, in 2017, "China Has Hip Hop" became popular. At the end of the year, the show’s champion PG One broke out with lyrics instigating drug abuse and pornography, and the outflow of movies with a close relationship with married actress Li Xiaolu, which also put the popular hip hop culture into question.

This incident also became the fuse for the official upgrade of the "Restricted Entertainment Order" in 2018.

In January of that year, the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television mentioned 4 non-standards at an internal meeting. They mentioned that they were "distinguished from the party and have no moral character", "vulgar, vulgar, kitsch", "ideological level, and style are not high"; "There are taints and scandals." Actors with ethical issues are determined not to use it, and it is also noted that artists with tattoos, artists who embody hip-hop culture, subculture, and funeral culture cannot use it. This is the first time that the ethical issues of artists have been regulated.

Since then, moral issues such as artist derailment and surrogacy have also begun to affect the artist's acting career.

It is about the severity of the plot. For example, Hua Chenyu's unmarried child has less impact than Luo Zhixiang's "multiplayer sports."

However, as can be seen from Figure 3 and Table 3, after the launch of the "Four Not Use" in 2018, everything is "strictly handled."

In September of this year, the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television further issued a notice listing the four major "persistences", which mentioned "resolutely resist unlawful and unethical" personnel, and once again mentioned the issue of ethics to further regulate the ethics of artists.

For example, after Huo Zun's derailment, he himself quickly expressed his stance to withdraw from the entertainment industry.

Table 3: The impact of "moral disputes" incidents on celebrities' performing arts (2001-2021).

(01 drawing)

However, the Weibo of artists involved in moral disputes is generally not banned. Even Huo Zun, who caused the controversy this year, Weibo is only banned.

A particularly stark example is Luo Zhixiang, who has plummeted due to the derailment of the "multiplayer sports", and continues to post several times on Weibo to "test the water temperature."

To see clearly the difference between such moral disputes and violations of laws and regulations, you can observe that Zheng Shuang's surrogacy and abandonment disputes and the "yin and yang contract" tax evasion disputes have caused public opinion twice.

Among them, "surrogacy and abandonment" is an illegal act in the Mainland, but the incident occurred in the United States. It is difficult for the Mainland to pursue its legal responsibility, so it is more morally condemned.

Zheng Shuang’s performances were released indefinitely due to the surrogacy crisis, but he still spoke on Weibo for a while, until after the tax evasion turmoil, he was banned by the authorities, and even his Weibo account was also banned.

Non-self words and deeds provoke unsuspecting disasters: usually get away safely

Figure 4: The impact of controversial events caused by "non-self" reasons on the star performing arts career (2001-2021).

(01 drawing)

Public figures may also encounter public relations crises or controversies caused by "non-self words and deeds", that is, the words and deeds of family members, fans, etc., and the artists themselves bring unwarranted disasters. A large number of online literary creations, including original and second creations known as "doujin") were controversial, and the first variety show "Youth Travel Notes" was deleted afterwards; Zhou Zhennan was exposed as "Laolai" because of his parents ( The owed money is not repaid) and the scenes of the variety show "Sister's Philharmonic Journey" were deleted and the recording of the show was withdrawn.

Artists involved in such incidents, although their acting career may be impacted at the beginning, in fact, most of them are able to escape safely after the turmoil subsides.

Most of the impacts are due to the resistance of the masses, or advertisers who are afraid of offending customers, or television stations requesting to delete images in order to avoid accidents.

Table 4: The impact of controversial events caused by "non-self" reasons on star performing arts (2001-2021).

(01 drawing)

It is worth mentioning that due to the frequent occurrence of chaos in the rice circle, in the 2021 "Qing Lang Network" series of actions to rectify the rice circle, the celebrity studio's "restraint" fan controversy has become the new normal.

For example, fans of Zhao Liying and Wang Yibo quarreled on Weibo, the studios of both parties were interviewed, and Zhao Liying's studio was even banned, clarifying the new "responsibility" of the star and his studio.

20 years of rising stars and falling stars

Combining the above series of charts, we can conclude that the crackdown on artists' violations of laws and regulations has become more stringent after the 2014 Bad Deeds Order; the political level has the greatest impact on artists and the most violent official "beating"; the moral requirements for artists It will be tightened after 2018, and further strengthened after 2021; disputes other than their own will generally not lead to artists being blocked, but in 2021 they will be affected by the "rural chaos", and celebrities will have to bear it from time to time. The responsibility of "managing fans".

In terms of time, 2014, 2018 and 2021 are three important time points.

The artist’s acting career has been increasingly affected by controversial events, and the "prodigal son" has to bear the corresponding responsibilities for his mistakes, and it is not easy to turn around.

Figure 5: A complete picture of the impact of the controversial event on the star's performing arts career (2001-2021).

(01 drawing)

For example, the official media commented on Li Yundi's prostitution, "It is difficult to turn over once you fall into the "thorns"."

Previously, Song Dongye, who was forced to take performances after being banned for drug use for three years, issued a complaint and complained. The official media responded that if drug addicts changed their lives, they could switch to other professions, "but continue. It’s not good to assume the role of a public figure."

These are the official intentions to warn stars that "life is the right way, not to go wrong" and "the more public figures you are, the more you must cherish feathers."

Looking back at the rise and fall of the stars over the past 20 years, from the rapid growth of the entertainment industry to the frequent occurrence of chaos, mainland officials have gradually given a clear instruction: When an entertainer star not only needs to improve his professional skills such as dancing, singing and acting, he must also bear it. The "social responsibility" of public figures and the pursuit of "double happiness in virtue and art" will raise the threshold of the entire entertainment circle as an artist.

(Extended reading: Wu Yifan Incident | A glimpse of the connotation of celebrities' "social responsibility", and it is difficult to be a spokesperson for China)

The huge market and profits of the mainland entertainment industry have brought unimaginable "flow" and profit to the stars. However, under the supervision of layers, it is "rectifying the impetuous atmosphere of the entertainment industry" and "improving the quality and removing the dross." "Essence" to bring a good cycle?

Or is it that "accelerating the speed of the replacement of stars" and "reducing the willingness to invest in the entertainment industry" have only increased the negative effects?

It is still unknown.

The scope of the mainland's governance of the entertainment industry has become wider and wider, spreading to the "personal morality" of artists and even the requirements for dressing. For example, the recent "restriction of mothers" has caused a lot of controversy.

(Visual China)

What is certain is that in the previous "orders" and "notices" issued by the entertainment industry, the explanation space implicit in terms such as "bad deeds" and "bad morals" will continue to allow various types of "artist lists" to be blocked and rectified. Measures in the entertainment industry have become a hot topic on the Internet.

Note: Research method

On September 2, the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television made it clear that the three types of artists must be resolutely not used, including those who have political positions, violated laws and regulations, violated public order and good customs, and have unethical words and deeds.

"Hong Kong 01" classifies these three categories as "violation/violation", "moral disputes", and "politics", which are also included in "non-self", which are divided into four major categories of disputes.

Regarding the choice of controversial stars, "Hong Kong 01" chose artists who focused on the development of the mainland performing arts business when making charts. Except for "non-self-controversial events" included in the topic of online discussion, the selection of other celebrity controversial events, It must be raised to the level of discussion and discussion by the mainland media before it is included.

For detailed chart material selection criteria and classification basis, please refer to the "Legend and Notes" in the figure series below:
