The narrow strip will soon be a thing of the past: the Luitpold Bridge and the Hochtrasse in Freising are to be made more bicycle-friendly.

The narrow strip will soon be a thing of the past: the Luitpold Bridge and the Hochtrasse in Freising are to be made more bicycle-friendly.

Freising

- Big improvements for cyclists in sight: "With the upcoming renewal of the dilapidated caps on the Luitpoldbrücke and the elevated route, a better cycle path can be implemented through the planned widening", reports Christl Steinhart, spokeswoman for the city of Freising.

“So far, cyclists have had to cross the Isar and the railway line on a narrow bicycle lane in the street area.

In future, they will be able to ride on both sides of the bridge caps on shared, wide footpaths and cycle paths. "

(By the way: Everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.)

Broadening in the years 2022/23

In the course of the renovation, according to Steinhart, “the bridge caps will be widened on both sides in 2022/23”.

The result is a combined walking and cycling path with a usable width of 2.65 meters on the elevated route and 2.80 meters on the Luitpold Bridge.

"In addition to the Isarsteg Nord and the Korbinian Bridge, cyclists have another safe route between Lerchenfeld and the city center and Neustift," emphasized the city hall spokeswoman.

The measure covers a length of almost 800 meters and affects not only the Hochtrasse and Luitpoldbrücke but also the bridge on the Angerbader area.

In the course of this measure, not only the bridge railings and the street lighting will be renewed, but also the surface layer in the roadway area, which is already crossed by ruts, will be re-applied.

During the construction work, traffic should be maintained in both directions as far as possible.

However, restrictions and disabilities are to be expected, according to Steinhart.

The entrances to the Luitpoldanlage and towards the Park-and-Ride-Platz should remain open.

Total costs and subsidy from the federal government

The total project costs decided by the city council amount to around 10.9 million euros. The Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure is supporting the project with grants of around 80 percent of the eligible costs from the federal government's special “City and Country” program. "I am delighted that our record funds are being used on site for bicycle traffic and are therefore being received directly by the citizens," said Federal Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer. “With our support, the city of Freising is creating more space for cyclists and pedestrians on the Hochtrasse and the Luitpold Bridge. All road users benefit from this, because this way the traffic is structurally separated from one another and road safety is increased. "

According to Scheuer, “the record sum” of 1.46 billion euros will be made available by 2023.

With the special financial aid program for urban and rural areas, the federal government “significantly improves the conditions for cyclists in urban and rural areas.

Start of construction of the preliminary measure

The executing company will start the first construction phase this year - probably next week.

Christl Steinhart explains: "By the end of the year, pre-cleaning systems will be installed at several points along the route, which will be used to drain the bridge areas after the overall measure is complete."
