Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova confirmed that Moscow has adopted the Russian law on foreign agents as a response measure to a similar US law.
Russia Today website quoted Zakharova as saying, in response to the criticism of the Commissioner for Human Rights in the Council of Europe, Dunja Mijatović: “It is surprising that the criticism is directed only against Russian law, without including similar American law.”
“Perhaps if international officials keen to guard freedom of expression had taken the same strict stance with regard to Washington, which began in 2017 to apply it to our media, we would not have had to adopt a similar law,” Zakharova added.
Earlier, Mijatović said that she intends to discuss with the Russian authorities the situation regarding the Memorial Human Rights Center and the Russian Foreign Agents Act.
