Memmingen - "With your design for the town house and family house in the east of Memmingen, you have ideally solved the many different usage requirements for this building," said Mayor Manfred Schilder, praising architect Elke Graf on behalf of her office graf architects GmbH.

The city announced this in a press release.

The establishment of an integrative neighborhood meeting emerged as a measure from the preparatory investigation in the east of Memmingen. The property that the city owns there on the corner of Münchner Strasse and Bayernring is being developed and used together with Häussler Liegenschaftsverwaltung GmbH & Co. KG. Therefore, the building must take into account the various requirements. In addition to rooms for the residents of the district, there will also be a café, a youth club, a day-care center and a bank branch. The KiTa children as well as the children and adolescents should also have separate areas outside.

Numerous architectural offices responded to the call for a joint implementation competition between the two property owners in April 2021.

The jury has now awarded five of the 16 submitted designs.

As already mentioned, the first prize goes to graf architects GmbH, whose design was developed together with TRR landscape architects Ritz and Ließmann PartG mbB, Munich.

In the laudation it says: With the location of the buildings, the design creates the desired closure of the quarter to the roundabout, as well as a new, inwardly located public space with a high quality of stay.

The most important public functions (community center, café, day-care center) are attached to this quiet “piazza”.

This leads us to expect a real revitalization of the quarter and enables all user groups to meet.

The ensemble welcomes its visitors with a large, opening gesture on the ground floor. The café benefits particularly from this. All other uses are also ideally positioned. Access to the youth center at Bayernring eliminates potential conflicts of use. The ways and internal organization of the bank branch is well resolved. The visibility of the café also benefits from possible visual relationships on the upper floor.

Due to their similarity in material and facade design, the two buildings appear as a unit and create - sometimes three-storey - a volume that does justice to the location and can assert itself against the surroundings. The location of the public playground at Bayernring is generous and understandable. The open spaces of the day care center, which are easily accessible for all groups, fulfill the program perfectly and at the same time secure the trees on the southern property line.

The 2nd place goes to a + p Architects Kellner - Krämer Munich, with Kalckhof Benoit Landscape Architects, Munich. 3rd place in the competition went to scherzer architects partnership, Nuremberg; with Rudolph Langner - Station C23 - Architects and Landscape Architects PartG mbB, Leipzig. A recognition goes to the design by Beer Bembé Dellinger, Greifenberg; together with Burkhardt I Engelmayer I Mendel landscape architects and urban planners Part mbB, Munich and Degle.Degle Gesellschaft von Architekten mbH, Königsbrunn together with “die grille”, Penzberg.

The evaluation criteria for the jury were, on the one hand, the quality of the urban structure and the functionality of the buildings.

The criteria of sustainability and energy efficiency were also included.

"If the work on this project is still on schedule, construction could start in spring / summer 2023 and completion by 2025," said the city's senior construction director Fabian Damm.

Lord Mayor Manfred Schilder is pleased that with this project, a cross-generational and cross-cultural meeting point will emerge from the urban development measure of the “Social City East” in this district.
