Vienna - Austria is facing another corona lockdown, according to several Austrian media.

The government agreed on this measure with the nine federal states, the reports say.

The exit restrictions should initially apply for ten days, according to the "Kronen Zeitung".

The country is suffering from a massive fourth corona wave.

The seven-day incidence per 100,000 population is 1,000.

"No alternative"

Most recently, the heads of the particularly badly affected federal states of Salzburg and Upper Austria had already announced a hard lockdown from next week.

There is “no alternative at all but to impose this lockdown,” said the Salzburg regional chief Wilfried Haslauer.

As of Monday, people there are only allowed to leave their homes for urgent errands, medical appointments, outdoor exercise or commuting.

Most shops and restaurants have to close.

Schools need to switch back to distance learning.

A member of the Standing Vaccination Commission (Stiko) has brought a "lockdown for everyone" into play in the event of an even more dramatic corona situation.

"We need an emergency switch if the intensive care units should really collapse," said Klaus Überla, director of the Virological Institute at the University Hospital Erlangen and member of the Stiko at the Robert Koch Institute, on Thursday the "Nürnberger Nachrichten" and the "Nürnberger Zeitung".

According to Haslauer, the seven-day incidence in children and adolescents between 5 and 15 years of age in the Salzburger Land is 2500. Both the Salzburger Land and Upper Austria border directly on Bavaria.

A lockdown for unvaccinated people has been in effect throughout Austria since Monday.
