Armenia and Azerbaijan agreed today to launch a direct line of communication at the level of the defense ministers of the two countries, following the recent border clashes between them.
The Russian TASS news agency quoted the European Council as saying in a statement today that its President, Charles Michel, “agreed with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, after phone talks, to launch a direct line of communication at the level of the defense ministers of the two countries with the aim of preventing border incidents in the Nagorno-Karabakh region.” “.
"Direct contact will serve as a mechanism to prevent accidents," the statement added.
Michel also agreed with the two sides to hold a meeting in Brussels within the framework of the Partnership Summit between the European Union and its allies in the East on December 15th.
The Armenian Ministry of Defense had announced earlier that 6 of its soldiers were killed during battles on the border with Azerbaijan on November 16, while the Azerbaijani Ministry of Defense indicated that 7 of its soldiers were killed and 10 others were wounded, before Russian mediation led to a ceasefire between the two sides.
