Covid-19: where is vaccination compulsory in the world?

Austria will impose vaccination from February 1. It is the first EU country to take such a step.


If a vaccination certificate is required for certain categories in a growing number of countries, very few in the world impose compulsory vaccination on all adults, like Austria which announced on Friday 19 November such a measure to from February 1, 2022. Very few countries require vaccination for their entire adult population. This is the case in two authoritarian Central Asian states, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan, one of the few countries to have reported no official cases of Covid. In Turkmenistan, the obligation seems to have taken effect, since 73% of the population had already received at least one dose at the end of August, according to the WHO. On the other hand, Tajikistan is, despite the obligation, only 29% of first-time vaccines on November 14.

The vaccination obligation is also in effect in Indonesia but not in practice due to the lack of vaccines.

The country still injected at least one dose to almost half of its population (49%).

In the Vatican, a February 2021 memo makes the vaccine imperative for the inhabitants of the smallest state in the world and the employees who work there.

A French territory in the South Pacific with wide autonomy, New Caledonia has made vaccination compulsory for all adults and travelers from the end of December.

Obligation for certain professional categories

Vaccination obligations for certain professional categories have multiplied all over the world.

In the United States, President Joe Biden announced on September 9 compulsory vaccination for some 100 million workers, federal government officials and private sector employees.

Challenged in court, the new regulations concerning employees of companies with more than 100 employees, were suspended on November 6.

In France, it has applied to staff in hospitals, retirement homes, firefighters, ambulance workers and home helpers, since September 15, but not to police officers. In Greece, vaccination became compulsory for nursing home staff on August 16 and for caregivers on September 1. In Italy, healthcare workers have been forced to be vaccinated since the end of May and nursing home staff since October 10. The vaccination obligation does not spare elected officials who will be excluded from their functions and deprived of their emoluments until they are vaccinated.

Hungary, where vaccination is already compulsory for caregivers, paved the way at the end of October for that of employees and civil servants.

In Slovenia, on the other hand, the decree obliging civil servants to be vaccinated was suspended by the Constitutional Court at the end of September.

Kazakhstan ordered the compulsory vaccination of most employees in contact with other people in early July, and Ukraine made it compulsory in October for teachers and civil servants.

In Equatorial Guinea, vaccination is compulsory for all civil servants, students and any person physically approaching an administration.

Zimbabwe warned in mid-September that officials refusing vaccination should resign.

In Canada, federal officials must be vaccinated as well as all travelers boarding a train, plane or boat.

A vaccination passport is required to enter public places.

An obligation imposed by companies

A growing number of large companies require all or some of their employees to provide proof that they have been vaccinated.

This is particularly the case in the United States for CVS pharmacies, the Chevron oil company, Disney and the Goldman Sachs bank.

In Australia, the Qantas airline requires vaccination for all its staff.

In some cases, vaccination is not compulsory but the obligations or restrictions for the unvaccinated are very dissuasive.

In Saudi Arabia, vaccination is compulsory to enter public and private establishments, and to use public transport.

In Italy, school and university staff and students must, if they are not vaccinated, provide proof of a negative test every two days.

Being vaccinated is necessary since October 18 in the Dominican Republic to go to all closed places, and for public transport.
