The Ethiopian government criticized the United States' issuance of a security alert about what it called the "dangerous" overflights in Ethiopia.
In a statement today, the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority confirmed that this US warning is "false and contradicts reality," stressing that any flight flying in the country's airspace, including through Addis Ababa International Airport, is safe and secure.
The authority said: “We assure the users of our airspace and our airports that we will not be lenient in ensuring their security and safety, and we are taking every effort to ensure that flights are organized in a safe and sound manner as in the past,” stressing adherence to international standards for aviation security and safety.
The US Federal Aviation Administration has called on pilots of flights to and from Ethiopia to be vigilant under the pretext of the danger that their planes will be directly and indirectly targeted when landing or taking off through Addis Ababa Airport, which is one of the most crowded airports on the African continent.
