Not only students have a chance of a high salary after graduation. Even skilled workers can earn a lot after their training. A study has shown in which professions this works best.

Not only students have a chance of a high salary after graduation.

Even skilled workers can earn a lot after their training.

A study has shown in which professions this works best.

Munich - More and more schoolchildren are choosing to study after graduation and less and less for an apprenticeship. According to the Federal Statistical Office *, the number of trainees has fallen by 17 percent in the last ten years, while the number of students has increased by 47 percent. Many hope to get a higher salary by studying in their professional life, but that does not necessarily have to be the case, as a study by the Institute of German Economy (IW) now shows.

Economists Helen Hickmann and Dr.

Ruth Maria Schüler recorded the 20 most lucrative professions for young skilled workers in statistics.

In all 20 occupations, the median gross monthly salary is over € 3,500.

This means that half of the group studied earns more than € 3,500 and the other half less.

For comparison: the median of the monthly salary of all employees subject to social insurance under 30 was just under € 2900 in 2020.

Young skilled workers: the 5 highest paid professions

Young professionals can earn the most in technical production planning and control.

In these professions, the median gross monthly wage is just under € 4,300.

The tasks of production planners are, for example, the planning and organization of work processes or the optimization of manufacturing processes.

Aerospace engineering takes second place in the statistics.

There, skilled workers can earn around € 4194 gross.

As a technician in the aerospace industry, you develop, design and test airplanes, helicopters or spacecraft.

Just behind this is the median monthly salary in the insurance and financial services sector at € 4141.

In these professions, for example, customers are advised on insurance and finance issues.

But also in chemical and pharmaceutical technology, young skilled workers can earn well above average with 4038 € gross.

The most lucrative apprenticeships: fire protection in 5th place

Occupations in fire protection are in fifth place in the statistics of the top salaries for skilled workers under 30. Here, on average, € 4018 gross can be earned.

In these professions you work in the professional fire brigade or in companies with an increased risk potential.

Just behind the top 5 most lucrative professions for young skilled workers are jobs in medical technology, in the energy and power plant sector, in opencast mining, automation technology or in social administration.

In all professions, young employees earn an average of between 3500 and 3900 euros.

It is noticeable that half of the 20 skilled occupations recorded are in the metal and electrical industries.

Choice of the apprenticeship occupation: Not only the salary plays a role

Despite the good salaries, the authors of the study also emphasize that later earning opportunities only play a subordinate role in the choice of the apprenticeship occupation.

There is a shortage of skilled workers in many industrial occupations, but especially in the metal and electrical industries, although the jobs are paid above average.

Rather, criteria such as personal interests and the level of awareness of the profession are included in the choice of training.

Schools should make occupations with a shortage of skilled workers and good earnings and career opportunities better known, according to the authors.
