Geography scholar Wu Shiliang and Green Earth Community Director Zheng Ruhui published a research survey. They interviewed 374 Hong Kong hikers and found that the desire to take away garbage is directly related to attitude, perceptual behavior control and preparation.

The study puts forward several suggestions to strengthen Shanyou's desire to "carry your own trash," including the authorities can provide garbage bags at the visitor center.

Since 2016, the Fisheries and Conservation Department has promoted "Take away your own trash", and have gradually put away the trash cans on the trails in the country parks.

Wu Shiliang, a professor at the Institute of Geosciences at the Chinese Culture University in Taiwan, and Ruhui Cheng visited 374 mountain hikers in Hong Kong from June 2019 to January 2020, hoping to understand the motives of Shanyou supporting "taking away your own trash."

Their research has recently been published in the academic journal "Waste Management". The results indicate that the attitude, perceived behavior control and preparation of mountain hikers are directly related to the desire to "take your own trash away", and preparation before hiking is very important. .

In order to reduce the inconvenience of Sanyou’s "carrying away trash by yourself", the study puts forward three suggested directions:

(1) The manager should improve the excursion route, keep the hiking trails in good condition, so that mountain friends can enjoy a convenient and pleasant trip;

(2) Educate

hikers

on how to prepare and persuade them to do it every time they hike. Fully prepared.

Bringing your own garbage bags, reducing the things you bring up the mountain, and using less disposable packaging supplies are all preparatory measures to help "take your own garbage away";

(3) The visitor center can provide garbage bags for those who need it. Mountain hikers can take it up the mountain for use and leave with trash.

Wu Shiliang added that convenience is an important factor for mountain hikers to take away their own garbage, but it is not the only reason. The above three suggestions are from the perspective of country park managers, hoping to make it easier for mountain hikers to practice "self Take the garbage away."

Regarding the suggestion of providing garbage bags at the visitor center, Zheng Ruhui stated that "you can even encourage the culture of helping hands clean up mountain trail garbage by borrowing bags."

In addition to taking away their own rubbish, some mountain hikers will also take the "clean mountain" or "clear path" to pick up the rubbish along the way.
