The International Labor Organization revealed that the Sheikhdom of Qatar did not report all deaths working in facilities related to the World Cup, stressing the need for transparency in terms of disclosing the number of victims of these work accidents and conducting related investigations by experts in the medical field.
The organization said in a report published today on its website that Qatar does not adequately investigate or report worker deaths, including unexplained deaths among workers.
The report indicated that it relied, in its census on the number of deaths, on data collected from government-run trauma centers and ambulances in 2020, which showed the death of 50 workers and the injury of more than 500 seriously injured, pointing out that falls from heights and traffic accidents were the most causes of these casualties. Who are mostly from Bangladesh, India and Nepal.
Commenting on the number of deaths, the report stated that the numbers may be higher because authorities do not classify all work-related deaths as such, including unexplained deaths among healthy workers and heat-related deaths.
The organization called on the sheikhdom of Qatar to collect more accurate and quality data while making more efforts to investigate injuries and deaths that may be related to work, in order to ensure that workers and members of their families receive the necessary compensation in the event of occupational injuries.
She stressed the need for these investigations to be carried out by medical experts as well as labor inspectors, calling on the Qatari Ministry of Health to establish an integrated national program that would allow the rapid and reliable collection of data on occupational injuries.
Last August, Amnesty International announced that many deaths among foreign workers in Qatar were shrouded in mystery, calling on the sheikhdom of Qatar to investigate the circumstances.
The conditions of foreign workers in projects linked to Mondia for 2022 were criticized by many organizations, especially in terms of the conditions in which they work and the lack of access to their rights, as reports showed the death of many of them as a result of hard working conditions and slavery-like practices in dealing with them.
