The Latin Grammys returned home to Las Vegas with a face-to-face ceremony.

Rubén Blades took over the most important category of the night: album of the year for “Salswing!”.

The award is shared with Roberto Delgado & Orquesta.

“Again a surprise, really a big surprise.

I have felt an ambivalence about the prize, because winning a prize at the expense of someone else losing has never pleased me.

I believe that nobody loses here.

It's not that I'm better than anyone.

So we accept this award on behalf of all those who are nominated because everyone here really wins, ”said Blades.

"Patria y vida" won the song of the year award and best urban song.

Camilo Echeverry, for his part, was the top winner of the night by taking home four Latin Grammys.

He came to the ceremony nominated in 10 categories.

Camilo was awarded in the categories best pop song for “Vida de rico”, best tropical song for “Dios thus lo quiso”, a song he composed for Ricardo Montaner and Juan Luis Guerra.

The other two awards came for "My hands" for best pop vocal album and "Tattoo" (remix), a single by Rauw Alejandro and that they both perform.

These are some of the key moments of the night.

Resident's thanks to Rubén Blades

Residente presented the Person of the Year award to Rubén Blades.

With shaking hands, René Pérez read a letter of thanks and admiration to Blades.

"Rubén, nobody in music has your literary work. Marvel and DC Comics have to ask you for your blessing because neither Metropolis nor Gotham City will be bigger than that world you created, Hispania," said Residente.

Residente had already shared these words on Wednesday night, during the private Person of the Year ceremony, where artists pay tribute to the winner by performing some of the most iconic songs of his career.

The emotional words of Residente and this personal tribute come weeks after the Puerto Rican reproached the attempted boycott of J Balvin to the Latin Grammy.

"To make matters worse, this year is dedicated to Rubén Blabes. In other words, you are telling people of the urban genre to boycott the awards and not to celebrate the artistic life of Rubén Blades. A guy who marked the history of Latin American music, a guy who, unlike you, writes his songs and feels them, "Residente told Balvin in a video posted on his Instagram account.

The night of "Homeland and life"

One of the expected presentations of the night was that of "Patria y vida".

Yotuel, Gente de Zona, Descemer Bueno and El Funky took the stage for an acoustic version of the song, which became an anthem for the historic opposition protests in Cuba.

The singers were introduced by Gloria Estefan.

The MGM Grand Garden Arena was lit up with the cell phones of the attendees who extended the stage to the last chairs in the venue.

Earlier, on the red carpet, the interpreters sent a message to the world with their clothes.

Descemer Bueno and El Funky posed for the media showing a t-shirt that says "Free Maykel", or "Freedom for Mykel".

This is Mykel Osorbo, interpreter of "Patria y vida", who has been in preventive prison in Cuba since May.

The Cuban government has not officially recognized the activist's arrest.

Under Maykel's photo is the hashtag #MSI, alluding to "Movimiento San Isidro", an artistic opposition coalition on the island.

Another who sent a message to the Cuban people was Yotuel, who wore the Cuban flag on a cape.

He was accompanied by Beatriz Luengo, his wife, co-author of "Patria y vida".

In the Latin Grammy acceptance speech during the Premiere, Luengo said that he has received threats for his work on the subject.

The return of Christina Aguilera

Another of the expected presentations of the night was that of Christina Aguilera.

After two decades the singer stepped onto the awards stage singing in Spanish.

He performed “Somos nada” with maestro Julio Reyes Copello on the piano.

This version, in which she demonstrated her vocal power, was followed by the collaboration “Pa 'mis chicas” with Nicki Nicole, Nathy Peluso and Becky G.

Juanes, on the pedestal of the historical winners

Colombian singer Juanes now has 24 Latin Grammys to his credit.

He did it for “Origen”, his most recent album, which was the winner in the category “best pop / rock album”.

"Origen is my personal tribute to several of those artists and songs that most influenced me before my solo career," Juanes said in May through a statement.

Juanes and Eduardo Cabra "Visitor" have the first place of the artists with the most victories in the Latin Grammy.

A Colombian woman wins best new artist

Julia Velásquez is the best new artist of the Latin Grammy 2021.

In her acceptance speech for the Latin Grammy, the Colombian singer performed the song "Joaquín" from her self-titled album.

"That song is called Joaquín, it is a song that I composed for a fisherman from my country, in Colombia, San Andrés and Providencia, the islands of my country. A fisherman who went to work and did not return. This award is Colombia and they are all the people that I have met along the way and the stories that I have been able to tell through my music. Colombia, this is yours! ", said the singer-songwriter in her speech.
